Daceton armigerum is a Neotropical species of arboreal ants, distributed throughout northern South America. D. armigerum combines several traits generally noted in some other arboreal ants i.e., populous colonies, large and/or polydomous nests, intra- and interspecific aggressiveness, trophobiosis, and capturing prey by spread-eagling them.
D. armigerum has a complex continuously polymorphic caste system, in which smaller workers nurse the brood and larger workers hunt, dismember prey items, and defend the nest. [2] The workers have trap-jaw, hypertrophied mandibles that snap together, triggered by sensory hairs situated on the labrum and powering a killer bite. The polymorphism of the worker caste is dramatic, and the size-frequency unimodal (monophasic allometry); foraging workers, themselves highly polymorphic, are larger than those from inside the colony. Workers are so well adapted to arboreal life that when they fall from the forest canopy they are able to glide down onto the trunk of their host tree. [3]
The species is distributed throughout northern South America and is known to occur in the terra firma and flooded forests of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad, and Venezuela. [4]
D. armigerum usually nests in cavities in the branches and trunks of trees previously bored by beetles and other insects. [2] The colonies, which are polygynic (multiple queens) and polydomous (multiple nests), can reach to ca. 952,000 individuals, much more than earlier estimates of 10,000 workers suggested by Wilson (1962). [5] [6] The colonies likely contain multiple egg-laying queens as none of the queens observed in one study had wing stubs. Indeed, in many ant species, non-mated females that remain or return to their nests lose their wings piece by piece, leaving stubs. On the contrary, after the nuptial flight, the queens use their hind legs to tear their wings off. This is possible due to the presence of a line of predetermined weakness situated at the base of wings and results in a neat tear usually considered an indication of having mated. [7]
D. armigerum workers shelter in the small chambers situated at the end of branches on host trees which is reminiscent of the "barracks" leaf nests built by Oecophylla beyond the limits of their territories and containing only old workers. [6]
Daceton armigerum workers use trail pheromones drawn from poison gland contents that remain active for more than 7 days. Trails laid with the sternal glands, relatively short-lived, serve to recruit nestmates to food patches, while secretions from the pygidial gland release attractants to food at short range (up to 15 cm). Short-range recruitment can also be elicited through visual signals. [3] As they hunt by sight, workers occupy their hunting areas only during the daytime, but stay on chemical trails between nests at night so that the center of their home range is occupied 24 hours a day. [3]
Workers are visual predators that hunt diurnally; by keeping their long trap-jaw mandibles open to ca. 180° they are frequently able to capture a wide range of prey, including relatively large items that they retrieve in groups of up to six ants. During prey capture, the workers can sting the prey; their poison gland contains a mixture of pyrazines. [3] Through group-hunting, short-range recruitment and spread-eagling prey, workers can capture a wide range of arthropods, the largest weighing up to 90 times the weight of an ambushing worker. [3] [8] Daceton armigerum workers ambush mostly on their host-tree branches. Ambushing workers detect prey by sight and can begin their lightning approach before the prey has landed, striking them immediately. [8]
Workers tend different hemipteran taxa (i.e., Coccidae, Pseudococcidae, Membracidae and Aethalionidae). [3] Trophobiosis (tending other organism for food) has been reported only twice for workers tending coccids. Yet, life for arboreal ants, particularly those species with large colonies, cannot only be based on the results of their predatory activity, so that their ability to exploit different plant-derived food sources such as extrafloral nectar and the honeydew of sap-sucking hemipterans is primordial. [3] Trophobiosis may be frequent, but can only be confirmed if observers have access to the uppermost part of the canopy or find a colony restricted to low vegetation. [6]
D. armigerum shows both intra- and interspecific aggressiveness. For example, D. armigerum does not share trees with Dolichoderus bispinosus and can compete with aggressive Azteca plant-ants to nest in myrmecophitic Cecropia obtusa . Yet, as already noted for other Neotropical ant species, D. armigerum frequently shares trees with large colonies of other arboreal ants. These situations are not entirely peaceful as D. armigerum workers frequently kill the Crematogaster individuals with which they even share trails and rob their prey (cleptobiosis). Azteca sp. workers likely benefit from having defensive compounds as, when they are trying to rob prey from D. armigerum workers, they are never struck even when within reach; they always retreated if chased. Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors in the Cretaceous period. More than 13,800 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified. Nothomyrmecia, also known as the dinosaur ant or dawn ant, is an extremely rare genus of ants consisting of a single species, Nothomyrmecia macrops. These ants live in South Australia, nesting in old-growth mallee woodland and Eucalyptus woodland. The full distribution of Nothomyrmecia has never been assessed, and it is unknown how widespread the species truly is; its potential range may be wider if it does favour old-growth mallee woodland. Possible threats to its survival include habitat destruction and climate change. Nothomyrmecia is most active when it is cold because workers encounter fewer competitors and predators such as Camponotus and Iridomyrmex, and it also increases hunting success. Thus, the increase of temperature may prevent them from foraging and very few areas would be suitable for the ant to live in. As a result, the IUCN lists the ant as Critically Endangered.
Crematogaster is an ecologically diverse genus of ants found worldwide, which are characterised by a distinctive heart-shaped gaster (abdomen), which gives them one of their common names, the Saint Valentine ant. Members of this genus are also known as cocktail ants because of their habit of raising their abdomens when alarmed. Most species are arboreal (tree-dwelling). These ants are sometimes known as acrobat ants.
Megalomyrmex is a genus of ant in the subfamily Myrmicinae. The genus is known only from the Neotropics, where some of the species are specialized parasites or predators of Attini.
Trophobiosis is a symbiotic association between organisms where food is obtained or provided. The provider of food in the association is referred to as a trophobiont. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek τροφή (trophē), meaning "nourishment", and -βίωσις (-biosis), which is short for the English word symbiosis.
Myrmecophagy is a feeding behavior defined by the consumption of termites or ants, particularly as pertaining to those animal species whose diets are largely or exclusively composed of said insect types. Literally, myrmecophagy means "ant-eating" rather than "termite eating". The two habits often overlap, as both of these eusocial insect types often live in large, densely populated nests requiring similar adaptations in the animal species that exploit them.
The longhorn crazy ant, also known as the black crazy ant, is a species of small, dark-coloured insect in the family Formicidae. These ants are commonly called "crazy ants" because instead of following straight lines, they dash around erratically. They have a broad distribution, including much of the tropics and subtropics, and are also found in buildings in more temperate regions, making them one of the most widespread ant species in the world. This species, as well as all others in the ant subfamily Formicinae, cannot sting. However, this species can fire/shoot a formic acid spray from its abdomen when under attack by other insects or attacking other insects. When the longhorn crazy ant bends its abdomen while aiming at an enemy insect, it is typically shooting its hard-to-see acid.
Azteca andreae is an arboreal ant species found in the tropics of South America, most notably in French Guiana. They are most notable for their predatory skills and strength. They are ambush predators that are able to capture and eat other insects much greater than their own size.
Polyrhachis is a genus of formicine ants found in the Old World with over 600 species. The genus is yet to be comprehensively resolved and contains many varied species including nest-weavers, swimming workers, soil and tree-dwellers. First fossil record of this genus was P. annosa from Miocene.
Apterostigma is a genus of New World ants of the subfamily Myrmicinae. Two species have been described from fossils preserved in Dominican amber, while the others are extant. They are fungus-growing ants, though, unlike the majority of other species in Attini who grow Lepiotaceae, some species have begun cultivating Tricholomataceae.
Dinoponera is a strictly South American genus of ant in the subfamily Ponerinae, commonly called tocandiras or giant Amazonian ants. These ants are generally less well known than Paraponera clavata, the bullet ant, yet Dinoponera females may surpass 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) in total body length, making them among the largest ants in the world.
Agroecomyrmecinae is a subfamily of ants containing two extant and two fossil genera. The subfamily was originally classified in 1930 by Carpenter as Agroecomyrmecini, a Myrmicinae tribe. Bolton raised the tribe to subfamily status in 2003, suggesting that Agroecomyrmecinae might be the sister taxon to Myrmicinae. It has since been discovered to be one of the earliest lineages of ants, a clade from the basal polytomy for all ants. In 2014, the subfamily was expanded to two tribes. The tribe Ankylomyrmini was moved from the subfamily Myrmicinae to Agroemyrmecinae.
Tatuidris, or armadillo ant, is a rare genus of ants consisting of a single species, Tatuidris tatusia. The ants are small in size and inhabit the leaf litter of Neotropical forests in Central and South America, from Mexico to Brazil. Workers are ferruginous-colored to dark red and present a distinctive morphology, consisting of a shield-like head with a broad vertex, ventrally-turned heavy mandibles which do not overlap at full closure, and unique among ants – an antenna socket apparatus sitting upside-down. Little is known about the biology of the ants, but they are likely nocturnal and specialist predators.
Daceton is a Neotropical genus of ants in the subfamily Myrmicinae. The genus contains only two species: D. armigerum, the most studied species, distributed throughout northern South America, and D. boltoni, known from Brazil and Peru.
Melissotarsus is a rare African genus of ants in the subfamily Myrmicinae. They are known from the Afrotropics and Malagasy regions, where their nests are located in living wood, built by tunneling through the wood under the bark. They are rarely seen outside of their nests, which may contribute to their perceived rarity. However, they are considered pest insects because of damage they can cause to trees, including economically important ones such as mangos and trees in the family Burseraceae, including Aucoumea klaineana, Dacryodes buettneri, and Dacryodes edulis.
Daceton boltoni is a Neotropical species of arboreal ants in the subfamily Myrmicinae. The species occurs in Peru and Brazil and is similar to its sister species, D. armigerum.
Dorylus gribodoi is a West African species of army ants in the genus Dorylus.
Polistes nimpha is a eusocial paper wasp found all over Europe, with particular sightings in Turkey, Finland, Estonia, and Latvia. It is also found in northern Africa, Pakistan, Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The climate in these areas is relatively cold and snowy in the winter, while summers are usually hot and dry, with steppe vegetation. Polistes nimpha colonies are relatively small and easily manipulated.
