The Darrell Survey, also known as the Darrell Survey Company, is an American independent research firm that tracks sporting goods, with a focus on golf equipment usage. [1] It was founded by Eddie Darrell [2] in 1932 and is currently based in Los Angeles. [3]

The Darrell Survey reports on golf equipment used during PGA Tour events, [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] as well as at tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour, LPGA, and Champions Tours. Darrell Survey also covers golf tours in Asia, including the Japan Golf Tour, [9] the LPGA of Japan Tour, the PGA Tour China Series, the China LPGA Tour, and at major international amateur events.

History

The Darrell Survey was founded by its namesake Eddie Darrell, [10] [11] who began the survey in 1932. [12] [9] Darrell travelled with the then-new PGA Tour, monitoring the use of golf equipment. [13] Specifically, Darrell recorded what balls and clubs were being used by every player on tour. [14]

Darrell operated the survey with his wife Virginia until his death in 1972, [12] after which she took over. [15] She ran it until 1980, [16] when it was purchased by Susan Naylor, who bought the company from Eddie Darrell's widow, Virginia. [17] [18] The company surveys the LPGA Tour and others - about 220 tournaments a year. [19]

Currently, the Darrell Survey Company [20] has sports equipment polls. [12] Darrell Survey statistics are also cited by equipment companies. [9] [21]

The company has representatives on the tee at each event to evaluate which equipment is being used by each golf player. [13] [22] [23] The Darrell Survey also allows companies to monitor the players they are sponsoring to ensure they are using their sponsored equipment on tour. [24] It also tracks player-worn logo visibility over the course of each event. [12]

The Darrell Consumer Survey also tracks detailed golf equipment-usage demographics of golfers. [25] [26] It operates in the US, Japan, South Korea, China, and Southeast Asia (including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia).

In men's major championships the lowest rounds are 62 by Branden Grace at the 2017 Open Championship, by Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele at the 2023 U.S. Open, and by Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry at the 2024 PGA Championship. The lowest officially recorded round is 55 by Rhein Gibson in 2012. In women's major championships the lowest round is 61, held jointly by Leona Maguire, Lee Jeong-eun and Kim Hyo-joo, all at the Evian Championship.

The Ping Gold Putter Vault provides the storage of the golf clubs from the Ping Gold Putter Program that was initiated by Karsten Solheim, to commemorate a golfer's victory using a Ping putter. Since the 1970s, tournament champions are presented with a gold-plated putter matching the specs of their putter and engraved with both their name and the name of the tournament won. A replica of the golf club is stored in a vault at the Ping headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 1983 Ladies European Tour was the fifth season of golf tournaments organised on behalf of the Women's Professional Golfers' Association (WPGA), which later became the Ladies European Tour (LET). There were 17 tournaments on the schedule.
