Denkyira District is a former district council that was located in Central Region, Ghana. Originally created as an district council in 1975. However, on 1988, it was split off into two new district assemblies: Upper Denkyira District (capital: Dunkwa-On-Offin) and Twifo/Heman/Lower Denkyira District (capital: Twifo Praso). The district council was located in the northwest part of Central Region and had Dunkwa-On-Offin as its capital town.

Denkyira was a powerful nation of Akan people that existed before the 1620s, in what is now modern-day Ghana. Like all Akans, they originated from Bono state. Before 1620, Denkyira was called Agona. The ruler of the Denkyira was called Denkyirahene and the capital was Jukwaa. The first Denkyirahene was Mumunumfi.

Denkyirahene is the title given to the King of the Denkyira people of the Central Region of Ghana. They are part of the Akan ethnic group. The Denkyirahene's official palace is the Amponsem Fie in Dunkwa-on-Offin. He comes from the Agona Clan.

Boa Amponsem Senior High School is a public co-educational senior high school named after Boamponsem, a Denkyirahene or a former ruler of Denkyira. It is located in Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana. It was established in 1961. The school won One-eighth Stage of Ghana National Science and Maths Quiz, 2020 contest by one point, after facing tough competition from the only all-female school to qualify from the Bono-Ahafo Zone – Our Lady of Mount Carmel Girls’ SHS.

Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Twifo/Heman/Lower Denkyira District; until the southeast area of the district was split off to create Hemang-Lower Denkyira District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Twifo-Atti Morkwa District. The district assembly is the northwest part of Central Region and has Twifo Praso as its capital town.

The Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast is a diocese of the Church of the Province of West Africa, a member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It is the oldest area of Anglican missionary activity in Ghana. This diocese was created out of the then Accra Diocese in 1981. It has had four Diocesan Bishops till date. They are the Rt Rev John Alexander Ackon, Rt Rev Eduah Quarshie, Rt Rev Daniel Sylvanus Adotei Allotey and the current Diocesan, Rt Rev Victor Reginald Atta-Baffoe. She is divided into 4 Archdeaconries namely - Winneba, Saltpond, Cape Coast and Fosu as well as the Cathedral Deanery. In 2014, the Diocese of Dunkwa-on-Offin was carved out of the Diocese of Cape Coast making it one of two in the Central Region of Ghana. She has an active church membership of around 10,000 worshipping in 33 Parishes and their outstations. She also has about 35 active duty clergy including two female deacons. In 2020 the Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast ordained its first female deacon, the Rev Mrs Vida Gyabeng Frimpong.

Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Twifo/Heman/Lower Denkyira District; until the southeast area of the district was split off to create Hemang-Lower Denkyira District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Twifo-Atti Morkwa District.
