Dragon Quest: Young Yangus and the Mystery Dungeon [lower-alpha 1] is 2006 action role-playing game developed by Cavia and published by Square Enix as part of the Mystery Dungeon and Dragon Quest series. The game is a prequel to Dragon Quest VIII .

Gameplay

Young Yangus and the Mystery Dungeon utilizes randomly generated dungeons and combat taken in turns. [1] Players must fight through different floors of enemies until they reach a boss monster, which they must defeat to advance through the story. [2] Combat takes place on contact with enemies, with no separate battle screen or menu system. [2] A new feature to the series is the "tension command", that allows players to build up attack power to deliver strong blows upon enemies, though the character cannot move in this state. [2] Later on in the game, and players can capture monsters with a special jug, and use them to attack opponents. [2] Players may keep three monsters in their possession at any one time, and can be taught to use special abilities by using items and through combat experience. [2] Monsters must reach level four, be given foods they like, and also a weapon before they will assist Yangus, and as they fight more and more, they will combine their strengths with other captured monsters. [2] [3] Players can also utilize a farmhouse late game where monsters can be kept and bred to create new and more powerful monsters. [2] The game also uses cinematic and computer generated scenes with a comic-book style. [2]

Story

The game centers around the character Yangus, one of the main characters in Dragon Quest VIII , as a child. [4] Described as a "plump bandit", he becomes involved with his father Yampa's gang of thieves when a mysterious jug is brought home. [2] [5] Though instructed not to touch the jug, Yangus does, and is sucked inside the bottle into another world called "Bottle Land". [2] Red, a female bandit from Dragon Quest VIII also appears in this new world, as well as Morrie, Torneko, and a new character named Poppy, and each begins to explore the dungeons of this new land. Development

A trailer for the game was shown in December 2005. [6] The game's soundtrack features music by Koichi Sugiyama from Dragon Quest VIII arranged by Hayato Matsuo. [7]

Reception

The game ranked third in Japan for game sales for the week of April 17 to April 23 in 2006. [8] The title sold over 340,000 copies in Japan by November 2006, according to Square Enix's IR, and ranking number 42 in sales overall for the year. [9] [10] The game was noted for its "cartoonish 3D graphics", and its full motion video was also praised. [3] [11] The original art style and cell-shaded graphics were highlighted for praise as well. [3] IGN described the dungeon movement system in the game as "clumsy". [2] The narration of the game was thought to be hilarious, due to the narrators acting out of various characters parts. [2] The protagonist of the game, Young Yangus, would later appear in other games in the Dragon Quest franchise such as Fortune Street in 2011 and Dragon Quest Rivals as part of an event in 2019.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, titled Dragon Warrior IV when initially localized to North America, is a role-playing video game, the fourth installment of the Dragon Quest video game series developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix, and the first of the Zenithian Trilogy. It was originally released for the Famicom on 11 February 1990 in Japan. A North American NES version followed in October 1992, and would be the last Dragon Quest game localized and published by Enix's Enix America Corporation subsidiary prior to its closure in November 1995, as well as the last Dragon Quest game to be localized into English prior to the localization of Dragon Warrior Monsters in December 1999. The game was remade by Heartbeat for the PlayStation, which eventually was available as an Ultimate Hits game. This was followed with a second remake developed by ArtePiazza for the Nintendo DS, released in Japan November 2007 and worldwide in September 2008. A version based on the Nintendo DS remake was released in 2014 for Android and iOS.

<i>Dragon Quest III</i> 1988 video game

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation, titled Dragon Warrior III when initially localized to North America, is a 1988 role-playing video game developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix. It is the third installment in the Dragon Quest series and was first released for the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan and later for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in North America. The game saw an enhanced remake for the Super Famicom in 1996 and the Game Boy Color in 2001, and a port to mobile phones and the Wii in 2009 and 2011. A version of the game for Android and iOS was released in Japan on September 25, 2014, and worldwide as Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation on December 4, 2014. It was the first time the game was given an official English subtitle. Final Fantasy Type-0 is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Released in Japan on October 27, 2011, Type-0 is part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries, a set of games sharing a common mythos which includes Final Fantasy XIII and XV. The gameplay, similar to Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, has the player taking control of characters in real-time combat during missions across Orience. Mystery Dungeon, known in Japan as Fushigi no Dungeon, is a series of roguelike role-playing video games. Most were developed by Chunsoft, now Spike Chunsoft since the merging in 2012, and select games were developed by other companies with Chunsoft's permission. The series began when co–creator of Dragon Quest, Koichi Nakamura, was inspired by Seiichiro Nagahata's experience with Rogue, who is also a fellow developer from the company, and a desire to create an original series. It began on the Super Famicom, progressing to almost all of Nintendo's and Sony's home and handheld consoles, WonderSwan, Dreamcast, Windows, and mobile devices.

<i>Dragon Quest IX</i> 2009 video game

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a role-playing video game co-developed by Level-5 and Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. Published by Square Enix in Japan in 2009, and by Nintendo overseas in 2010, it is the ninth mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series. The storyline follows the protagonist, a member of the angelic Celestrian race, after a disaster in their home scatters magical fruits across the mortal realm. While carrying over traditional gameplay from the rest of the series with turn-based battles, the game is the first Dragon Quest entry to feature a customizable player character, and the first to include a multiplayer mode, with the option of trading treasure maps and loaning player characters through Nintendo Wi-Fi. Online functions ended in 2014 when it ceased operations.

<i>Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable</i> 2006 video game

Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable is a crossover party board video game in the long running Itadaki Street series. The game is notable for its inclusion of characters from the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series of video games, being the second in the series to do so, the first being 2004's Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Special for the PlayStation 2. Itadaki Street Portable was developed by Think Garage and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable in Japan on May 25, 2006. As with other entries in the series prior to it, was not released in any other regions.

<i>Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road</i> Video game series

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road is a series of Japanese arcade games based on Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Players battle monsters and can win real-life cards with monster data imprinted on them. The first game, also titled Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road, was released in 2007 only in Japan, using the Taito Type X2 system. A sequel, Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road II Legends, was announced at the 2009 Jump Fiesta in Tokyo, and a third game in the series, Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Victory, a port of the Legends game, was announced for the Wii in 2010. Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Scanner was scheduled for release in the arcade in 2016.

Dragon Quest X: Awakening of the Five Walkers Online, also known as Dragon Quest X Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. It is the tenth mainline entry in the Dragon Quest series. It was originally released for the Wii in 2012, and was later ported to the Wii U, Windows, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Nintendo 3DS, all of which support cross-platform play. Other than a discontinued Windows version in Chinese, the game was not localized outside of Japan.

<i>Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2</i> 2010 video game

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 is a Nintendo DS role-playing video game published by Square Enix. It is the sequel to Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and is the fifth game in the Dragon Quest Monsters series. It was released in Japan on April 28, 2010, with a United States release on September 19, 2011, with a European release following on October 7, 2011. The Japanese video game magazine Famitsu reviews video games by having four critics each assign the game a score from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest score. The scores of are then added together for a maximum possible score of 40. As of 2023, twenty-nine games have received perfect scores from Famitsu.

Tetsuya Nomura is a Japanese video game artist, designer, producer and director working for Square Enix. He was hired by Square initially as a monster designer for Final Fantasy V (1992), before being shifted towards secondary character designer alongside Yoshitaka Amano for Final Fantasy VI (1994). Final Fantasy VII (1997) had him working in the original story alongside Hironobu Sakaguchi, and marked his debut as the lead character designer, a capacity he would retain for several future installments of the series, as well as other Square Enix titles such as The Bouncer and The World Ends with You.
