Exoneura (also called the Reed bee) is a genus of social bees belonging to the taxonomic family Apidae. [1] This genus has glossy black head and thorax with a black or red-orange abdomen. The species of this genus are found only in Australia, often in small burrows they dig up themselves. [1] Members of this genus are generally 8 millimeters (mm) in length. [2] This species is parasitized by members of the genus Inquilina. This relationship with Inquilina has been going on for approximately 15 million years. [3]

Burrows

This species are often found in small burrows which two or more adult Exoneura can be found in. They put pollen and nectar inside their burrows which they lay their eggs on. Their nest can contain many young at several stages of life. [4]

Behavior

Behavioral plasticity

The Exoneura genus exhibits notable behavioral plasticity observed in many of its species including E. robusta and E. bicolor. Environmental factors experienced by this species that impact its behavior include nesting substrate, predation and parasitization, and resource availability [5] . Focused substrate preferences have been show to create localized nest aggregations which impact behaviors such as task specializations [5] [6] . Task specialization in one species of Exoneura, E. bicolor, expresses as altruistic behaviors seen as guarding and nest absenters who face an increased individual risk for the health and success of the colony [6] [7] .

Myrmecia inquilina is a species of ant endemic to Australia in the subfamily Myrmeciinae, first discovered in 1955 and described by Athol Douglas and William Brown Jr. in 1959. These ants are large, measuring 21.4 millimetres (0.84 in). During the time of its discovery, Douglas and Brown announced M. inquilina as the first social parasite among the primitive subfamilies, and today it is one of the two known Myrmecia species to have no worker caste. Two host species are known, Myrmecia nigriceps and Myrmecia vindex. Aggression between M. inquilina and its host species does not occur, and colonies may only produce M. inquilina brood months after the inquiline queens begin to lay their eggs. Queens eat the colony brood or trophic eggs, and other Myrmecia species may kill M. inquilina queens if they reject them. Due to its restricted distribution and threats to its habitat, the ant is "vulnerable" according to the IUCN Red List.

Parasitellus is a genus of mites in the family Parasitidae which are obligatory parasites of bumblebees. These mites can be found clinging to the carapace, sometimes in large numbers. Mites in this genus hibernate in the deutonymphal stage. In the tritonymph stage they can actively transfer from bumblebee to bumblebee from flowers, where they can survive up to 24 hours. After they arrive in a bumblebee nest, they will moult into adults. An ergatoid is a permanently wingless reproductive adult ant or termite. The similar but somewhat ambiguous term ergatogyne refers to any intermediate form between workers and standard gynes. Ergatoid queens are distinct from other ergatogyne individuals in that they are morphologically consistent within a species and are always capable of mating, whereas inter caste individuals, another class of ergatogynes, often are not. <i>Euglossa cordata</i> Species of bee

Euglossa cordata is a primitively eusocial orchid bee of the American tropics. The species is known for its green body color and ability to fly distances of over 50 km. Males mostly disperse and leave their home nests, while females have been observed to possess philopatric behavior. Because of this, sightings are rare and little is known about the species. <i>Exoneura robusta</i> Species of bee

Exoneura robusta is a species of the primitively eusocial allodapine bee, belonging to the genus commonly referred to as "reed bees". Their common name derives from their use of the soft pith of dead fern fronds as a nesting material. They are native to southeastern Australia, living in both montane and heathland habitats. E. robusta do not have a fixed pattern of sociality, but rather they are capable of adapting their social strategy to different environments. While typically univoltine, populations living in warmer habitats are capable of producing two broods per season. This leads to the incidence of sibling rearing and eusocial behavior. E. robusta lack strict morphological castes, thus allowing for their plastic social behavior and dominance hierarchies.
