The "Go U Northwestern", originally titled "Go Northwestern Go", [1] is one of the fight songs of Northwestern University.
The song was written in 1912 by Theodore Van Etten, a member of the Northwestern University Wildcat Marching Band at the time. It debuted November 23, 1912, at old Northwestern Field in Northwestern's football season-finale versus the Illinois Fighting Illini. [2]
The song, along with Northwestern's other fight song, "Rise, Northwestern!" (commonly called the "Push On Song" or simply "Push On!"), and the university's alma mater, "University Hymn" (sometimes "Quæcumque Sunt Vera") are Northwestern official school songs.[ citation needed ] "Go U Northwestern" or "Rise, Northwestern!" is played by the marching band during football games every time Northwestern scores against its opponent and at various other times during the game.[ citation needed ]
Along with being the Fight Song of Northwestern University, "Go U Northwestern" is the fight song for many high schools, with some using it under the original name. [3] Several other colleges and universities use the song as well, including Northern Oklahoma College Enid [4] and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1998 to 2010.
In an early 1970s Sesame Street sketch, Ernie sings the song's opening bars while wearing a football helmet, eager to open a present Bert has wrapped, that Ernie thinks is a new football for him. [5]
Count von Count is a Muppet character on the PBS/HBO children's television show Sesame Street. He is meant to parody Bela Lugosi's vampiric character, Count Dracula. His first appearance on the show was on the 4th season in 1972, where he counts blocks in a sketch with Bert and Ernie.
Ryan Field was a stadium in the central United States, located in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago. Near the campus of Northwestern University, it was primarily used for American football, and was the home field of the Northwestern Wildcats of the Big Ten Conference. Before its demolition in 2024, it was the only FBS stadium without permanent lighting, and its final seating capacity was 47,130. The stadium closed at the end of the 2023 season, and preparation for demolition began on January 29, 2024 to make way for a new Ryan Field on the site. On April 17th, 2024, Ryan Field was fully demolished after 97 years of Northwestern Wildcats football.

Bert and Ernie Sing Along is a Sesame Street album released in 1975 that involved the entire cast of humans and Muppets doing a sing-along in Bert and Ernie's bathroom. The songs and dialog were recorded exclusively for this album. A year later however elements of this album were re-imaged into a television storyline for the Sesame Street TV program. The album was scripted by Joseph A. Bailey and originally conceived as a radio program. Bailey worked on the televised version of the story as well.
