Golden Valley High School is a school in the William S. Hart Union High School District in the Canyon Country [4] [5] neighborhood of Santa Clarita, California, United States. The school first opened in 2004 with a new campus, admitting freshmen and sophomores; the first class graduated in 2007.

History

Golden Valley High School was built with grants from the state of California's Financial Hardship Assistance program. After initially sitting dormant after construction, the school's theater was finished around 2010. [6]

Activities

Marching Band and Color Guard

The Golden Valley High School Grizzly Marching Band and Color Guard plays at home football games which are located at Canyon High School and they participate in SCSBOA competitions. Their marching band division size has ranged from 2A to 4A, but it is currently in the 3A division for the 2023 Fall Semester.[ citation needed ]

Choir

The school has two competitive show choirs, the mixed-gender "Voltage" and the female-only "Vibes". [7]

Video production

In 2019, the school's GVTV (Golden Valley Television) won Best Daily Live Announcement Show on the West Coast from Student Television Network. [8]

Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps

The school is host to the U. S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps unit CA-20063. [9]

Athletics

Golden Valley started its athletics program when the school first opened in 2004.

In 2011 the boys' cross country team succeeded in achieving their first state championship in CIF Division II. They also placed 11th at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon.

Student demographics

As of the 2021-22 school year, 2,138 students were enrolled at Golden Valley High School. 60.1% of students were Hispanic, 16.4% were non-Hispanic white, 11.0% were Asian American, and 8.3% were African American. [3] As of 2019-20, 1,058 students (49.3%) were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. [1]

The William S. Hart Union High School District is a school district in the Santa Clarita Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It serves all of the valley's high school students and most of its junior high school students. As of 2022–23, the total number of enrolled students was 22,469. The district's superintendent is Mike Kuhlman. The district is named after William S. Hart, one of the first western film stars, who lived in Newhall and was a local benefactor. The region served by the Hart District is also served by the Sulphur Springs, Saugus, Castaic, and Newhall elementary school districts.

Academy of the Canyons (AOC) is a public middle college high school in Santa Clarita, California, United States. The school, which enrolls students from 9th to 12th grade, is part of the William S. Hart High School District. It is located on the Valencia College of the Canyons campus, where students of AOC are concurrently enrolled. Students attending Academy of the Canyons take high school classes at the University Center and college courses at the College of the Canyons campus. During grades 9–12, students can earn up to 80 college units. A significant number of students at Academy of the Canyons have received one or more associate degrees by or before their high school graduation.
