Gonipterus is a genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae. There are approximately 20 described species in the genus, most of which are native to Australia. They are all plant feeders and many are specific to a single host species. Gonipterus platensis , Gonipterus pulverulentus , and an undescribed species infest a number of species of Eucalyptus and have spread to other parts of the world where these trees have been planted. [1]
Populations formerly misidentified as Gonipterus scutellatus in New Zealand, North America, and western Europe are Gonipterus platensis , and those in Africa and eastern Europe are an undescribed species. [1] These were historically all misidentified as G. scutellatus until researchers examined the DNA of the pest species in 2012 and determined that none of the pests were genuine G. scutellatus. [1] Populations in South America formerly identified as Gonipterus gibberus , are now recognized to be G. pulverulentus . [1]
Species include: [2]
Cryptorhynchinae is a large subfamily of weevils (Curculionidae), with some 6000 species. They are found in most zoogeographic regions although they are most diverse in the Neotropics, Australia and Oceania.
Aulacophora is a genus of beetles in the family Chrysomelidae, commonly known as pumpkin beetles; some species are pests of agricultural crops. The genus was named in 1836 by the French entomologist Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat, in Dejean's Catalogue des Coléoptères. The name, from Ancient Greek, signifies "furrow-bearer"' from aulax, "furrow".
Mordella is the type genus of the tumbling flower beetle family (Mordellidae), its subfamily Mordellinae and the tribe Mordellini. It is widely distributed in the Holarctic and adjacent regions. The larvae are primarily dead wood borers.
Gonipterus gibberus is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is commonly known as the eucalyptus snout beetle, the eucalyptus weevil or the gum tree weevil. It feeds and breeds on Eucalyptus trees and is endemic to Australia.
Gonipterus scutellatus is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is commonly known as the eucalyptus snout beetle, the eucalyptus weevil or the gum tree weevil. It feeds and breeds on Eucalyptus trees and is endemic to Australia.
Poropterus is a genus of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae.
Rhigus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae.
Exophthalmus is a genus of broad-nosed weevils in the family Curculionidae. It contains 85 described species.
Rhamphini is a weevil tribe in the subfamily Curculioninae.
Anaphes nitens is a species of fairyfly, a chalcid wasp in the family Mymaridae. Native to Australia, it is an egg parasitoid of the gum tree snout beetle, a pest of Eucalyptus trees, and has been used in biological pest control of that species.
Paropsisterna is a genus of leaf beetles indigenous to Papua New Guinea and Australia. There are over 120 species, many with bright aposematic colours, and many feeding on Eucalyptus leaves.
Amycterus is a genus of weevils belonging to the Amycterini tribe in the family Curculionidae, first described by Carl Johan Schönherr in 1823. The decisions for synonymy are based on work by Alonso-Zarazaga, M.A. and Lyal, C.H.C. and Elwood Zimmerman.
Misophrice is an Australian genus of true weevils associated with plants in the family Casuarinaceae.
Gonipterus platensis is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is commonly known as the eucalyptus snout beetle, the eucalyptus weevil or the gum tree weevil. It feeds and breeds on Eucalyptus trees and is endemic to Australia, though it is also found in New Zealand, North America, Hawaii, and western Europe.
Gonipterus pulverulentus is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is commonly known as the eucalyptus snout beetle, the eucalyptus weevil or the gum tree weevil. It feeds and breeds on Eucalyptus trees and is endemic to Australia, though it is also found in South America.
Onidistus is a genus of hidden snout weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are about four described species in Onidistus, found in Australia and the South Pacific.
