Greater Manchester bus route 201 is a bus route operating between Piccadilly Gardens and Hattersley. It is operated by Stagecoach Manchester.

History

Greater Manchester bus route 201 has an interesting history, linking areas within Manchester and Tameside for many years. It primarily connects Manchester city centre with Hattersley, passing through major areas such as Gorton, Denton, and Hyde. The route, originally established in 1980s by Greater Manchester Transport (GMPTE), was designed to provide transport from the city centre to the outer suburbs of Greater Manchester, particularly Hattersley, a large housing estate. After the 1986 bus deregulation in the UK, private operators started competing on the route. [1] However, the service remained largely consistent, continuing to be managed by GM South Buses. In February 1996, GM South Buses was bought by Stagecoach and rebranded as Stagecoach Manchester. [2] , which became the current operator of the route. Under Stagecoach Manchester, the route has its fleet modernized, including the introduction of more accessible and eco-friendly buses. Service frequencies have also been adjusted to cater to passenger demand.[ citation needed ]

The route begins at Piccadilly Gardens, operates via Ardwick, Gorton, Belle Vue, Denton and Hyde to Hattersley. It is one of the bus routes that uses the Hyde Road corridor, along with 202, 203 and 205. [3]
