Hardwick is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Baldwin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,513 at the 2020 census, [2] down from 5,135 in 2000, at which time it was listed as Midway-Hardwick. It is laid out around Central State Hospital. It is part of the Milledgeville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The zip code for Hardwick is 31034. Hardwick was home to Oglethorpe University during the 19th century.

Hardwick is located at 33°3′9″N83°14′14″W / 33.05250°N 83.23722°W / 33.05250; -83.23722 (33.052571, -83.237130). [3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.6 km2), of which 0.012 square miles (0.03 km2), or 0.20%, is water. [4]

Hardwick, then known as Midway-Hardwick, was first listed as an unincorporated place in the 1950 U.S. Census [11] and redesignated a census designated place in the 1980 U.S. Census. [14] It was renamed Hardwick CDP in the 2010 U.S. Census. [19] [16]

The Baldwin State Prison, previously the Baldwin Correctional Institution and the Georgia Women's Correctional Institution (GWCI), is a prison located in Milledgeville, Georgia, United States, with a Hardwick postal address. The prison has a capacity of 900. After complaints in the early 1990s by more than 200 women of sexual abuse by guards, an investigation was conducted. More than a dozen guards were prosecuted. The state decided to move the women to other prison facilities for a total change in culture. This facility now houses only adult male felons, with a capacity of 992.

Men's State Prison was a Georgia Department of Corrections prison for men in Milledgeville, Georgia, near Hardwick. The facility closed in 2011.
