Huntington Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in the village of Barboursville in Cabell County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Currently the largest mall in West Virginia, it opened on 3 February 1981 and features more than 150 retailers. Anchor stores include Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, Macy's, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and a Cinemark theater, with two vacant anchors last occupied by Field & Stream and Sears. Other major tenants include Books-A-Million and Old Navy. The mall is owned by Cafaro Company of Youngstown, Ohio.

History

The Huntington Mall opened on Tuesday 3 February 1981, about 12 miles (19 km) east of downtown Huntington near exit 20 of Interstate 64. [2]

At the time, it included JCPenney, Lazarus, Stone & Thomas, and Sears as its anchor stores. When the mall's Foot Locker store opened, tennis player Bobby Riggs made an appearance at the mall, challenging mall employees to a game of tennis. [3] Phar-Mor, a discount pharmacy chain, was later added to the mall as its fifth anchor in 1990. [4]

Stone & Thomas was converted to Elder-Beerman in 1998 when the chain was acquired. A year later, Borders Books & Music opened its first West Virginia store at the mall. [5] Old Navy, Steve & Barry's and local chain Dawahares were later added to the mall as well. After Phar-Mor closed in 2002, it became the second Dick's Sporting Goods in the state. [2]

In mid-2008, it was announced that Cinemark would open a new movie theater at the mall, replacing the vacated six-screen complex that closed in 2006 and an adjacent cafeteria (which use to be Picadilly Cafeteria). This new theater opened in early 2009. [6] Borders Books closed in 2011, due to the company's bankruptcy. Books-A-Million later replaced it. Parent company The Bon-Ton closed the Elder-Beerman in the mall on January 31, 2016, [7] and the space was split among Forever 21, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods.

On August 6, 2019, Sears announced it would be closing its location at the mall in late October, while the auto center closed in late August. [8]

On October 2, 2019, Forever 21 announced that it would also be closing in late 2019 after filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. [9]

A catchy Radio jingle from the 1980's/1990's was "Experience it all, at the Huntington Mall!"

Impact

Huntington Mall is the largest mall in the state of West Virginia. [10] When the mall was built, the only other businesses around it were two bars and an Exxon gas station. Since the mall's opening, several retailers have built around the mall, including four motels and several restaurants, as well as a Walmart Supercenter, the first Best Buy in West Virginia, and the first Sheetz gas station/convenience store in southern West Virginia. [2] Huntington Mall has also averaged $375 million in retail trade, significantly increasing the tax revenue for Barboursville's budgets. [2]

Prien Lake Mall is an enclosed, regional shopping mall in Lake Charles, Louisiana which serves 344,268 people. It is located on West Prien Lake Road and is highly visible from Interstate 210. The Mall is named after Prien Lake, which is one of the lakes in the city of Lake Charles. When it opened in 1972 with 35 stores, many retailers from downtown Lake Charles relocated to the mall leading to urban blight in the downtown area. The anchor store on opening was Montgomery Ward. The mall was extended with a new wing opening in 1998, increasing floorspace to 800,000 sq. ft. including a new food court and Sears store, which closed in 2018. In 2001 an Educational Resource Centre was approved for opening in the mall with federal funding from the US Department of Education's Community Technology Centers Program. It provides adult education and English classes. In that same year, Houston-based Foley's came to the mall with a new store built, only to rebrand as Macy's five years later. Macy's only lasted at the mall for a year until it closed in early 2008. By 2009, Kohl's replaced the former Macy's building. The anchor stores are Dillard's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Kohl's, Kirkland's, JCPenney, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Cinemark Theatres. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Sears.

Meadowbrook Mall is a regional shopping mall in Bridgeport, West Virginia. It was built in late 1982 by the Cafaro Company of Youngstown, Ohio. The original architecture and engineering was done by the Keeva J. Kekst company. The mall includes four anchor stores, JCPenney, Target, Marshalls, and a Cinemark theater, with a fifth anchor on the way as Boscov's is opening in 2023. Former anchors include Elder-Beerman, Ames, Murphy's Mart, Stone & Thomas, The Bon-Ton, Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Joann. Marshalls was added in 2008. ULTA Beauty opened here in 2015. Ohio Valley Mall is a one-story enclosed shopping mall in Richland Township, outside St. Clairsville, Ohio. It was opened in 1978 and was developed by the Youngstown, Ohio-based Cafaro Company, which continues to own and manage it. The mall currently has four open anchor stores which are Boscov's, Dunham's Sports, Marshalls, and Michaels. It contains more than 100 stores and services. The mall currently has two vacant anchor stores which were once Macy's and Sears.

Muncie Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Muncie, Indiana. Opened in 1970, it was developed by Melvin Simon & Associates, now known as Simon Property Group. The mall's original anchor stores were W. T. Grant, Britt's, Sears, and Ball Stores. In 2020 the mall had no anchor stores, although it continued to have over 30 inline tenants. Its anchor stores as they closed were JCPenney, Macy's, Carson's, and Sears. In 2021 the former Macy's building was bought by a discount store called Buyers Market. The mall is owned and managed by the Woodmont Company.

Colony Square Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Zanesville, Ohio. Opened in 1981, the anchor stores are Cinemark Theatres, Dunham's Sports, Planet Fitness, TJ Maxx, Five Below, Jo-Ann Fabrics, and JCPenney. There is 1 vacant anchor store that was once Elder-Beerman. It is owned by Time Equities, Inc.

The Piqua Center is an enclosed shopping mall in Piqua, Ohio, United States, opened in 1988. The mall's anchor store is Dunham's Sports. There are 3 vacant anchor stores that were once Sears, Elder-Beerman and JCPenney. The mall also has a Comfort Inn.
