Jal Hans is a commercial seaplane service based in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. It is a pilot project that was launched on 30 December 2010 by the then Indian Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, at Juhu Aerodrome in Mumbai. The airline is jointly owned by Pawan Hans, India's largest helicopter services provider, [1] and the Andaman and Nicobar administration and is run on an equal profit and loss basis between them. Overview

Jal Hans is India's first commercial seaplane service. [4] The service currently has one six-year-old Cessna 208 A, an amphibious aircraft that cost around Rs. 80 million that has the capability of landing on most calm waters. [4] It aims to promote tourism and connectivity by connecting far flung islands and backwaters with the mainland in a country that has a 7400-kilometre long shoreline. Initially Jal Hans started flying from Port Blair to Havelock Island, where a waterdrome infrastructure is being installed and then Diglipur, again at a waterdrome.

The first flight from Port Blair to Havelock Island took place on 24 January 2011, and was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bhopinder Singh. Waterdrome facilities include speed boats to ferry passengers from the sea shore to the pontoons with a capacity of 10 passengers, sanitation, an inflatable boat and an inflatable jetty. [2] [3] [5]

Jal Hans has exclusive rights to service Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a period of five years. [4]

Expansion

The airline expects to expand to Lakshadweep Islands, backwaters in Kerala, Gujarat, Sundarbans in West Bengal and Puri in Orissa soon. [3]

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration and Pawan Hans Limited in collaboration operate regular Helicopter services for Inter-Island Transport In Andaman. Pawan Hans Ltd. flies a 10-seater Dauphin 365 N Helicopter. [6] Pawan Hans owns 49 % of jal Hans. [7]

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago in the northeastern Indian Ocean about 130 km (81 mi) southwest off the coasts of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Region. According to official estimates in India, 10,749 people were killed, 5,640 people were missing and thousands of people became homeless when a tsunami triggered by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake near the Indonesian island of Sumatra struck the southern coast on 26 December 2004. The earthquake registered 9.1–9.3 Mw and was the largest in five decades. It was followed by strong aftershocks on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The death toll of the earthquake was 1,500 people.

Pawan Hans Limited is a government-owned-helicopter service provider based at Noida in Delhi NCR, India.It is under the ownership of Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. Kerala Seaplane was a commercial seaplane service promoted by Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited in the Indian state of Kerala. It was launched on 2 June 2013 at Kollam with the inaugural flight being operated by Kairali Aviation. However, commercial operations could not start due to opposition from the local fishing community. The Kerala Government was keen on restarting regular operations of the project in 2014. The service was to be the first such service in mainland India, and the second in India after Jal Hans, which operates seaplanes in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Work on the Kerala seaplane project began at the end of July, 2012 and has been praised for being one of the fastest projects to be completed in Kerala.

INS Kohassa is an Indian naval air station under the Andaman and Nicobar Command of the Indian Armed Forces. It is located at Shibpur, a village located on North Andaman Island.

Tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands relates to tourism in union territory of India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Andamans are an archipelago of over 570 tropical islands, of which only 36 are inhabited. In 2004 Radhanagar beach at Havelock Island was bestowed with the title of "Asia’s Best Beach" and as the world's seventh most spectacular beach by Time Magazine.
