James Byron Casey (born September 22, 1984) is an American professional football coach and former player who is the tight ends coach for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He played in the NFL as a tight end and fullback. He was selected by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft and has also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Rice Owls and played baseball and football at Azle High School.
Casey lost his mother at the age of 16, when a fire burned their home. He was only left with his backpack and the clothes he was wearing. He received support from citizens of Azle, Texas, who provided clothes, shelter and money to further his studies and his athletic career. He lived in various locations, with his older sister for a while, with his future wife’s family, with the trainer at Azle High School.
Casey is married to his high school sweetheart, Kylie, and has two sons with her. [1]
Casey was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2003 MLB Draft. [2] He played in the White Sox organization for three years before retiring after 2006 to pursue a career in football.
After retiring from baseball Casey chose to play college football at Rice University. As a freshman in 2007 Casey started four of 12 games recording 46 receptions for 585 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 144 rushing yards on 45 carries and five touchdowns as a running back and completed two of seven passes for 32 yards and an interception as a quarterback. He also played seven different positions in a game against Southern Mississippi.
As a sophomore in 2008 Casey started all 13 games at tight end earning third-team All-American and first-team All-Conference USA honors. He finished the season setting a single-season school record for receptions with 111 for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also added 241 rushing yards on 57 carries and six touchdowns and completed two of five passes for five yards. Casey ended his collegiate career with NCAA tight end records for most passes caught in a season, most passes caught per game in a season, most yards gained in a season, and most yards per game in a season. After his sophomore year Casey announced that he would enter the 2009 NFL draft. [4]
Casey graduated from Rice with a triple major in Economics, Sports Management, and Managerial Studies and a 3.84 GPA.
Casey was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft. [5] In his first game as starter, Casey caught three passes for 29 yards, but did not record a carry. In 2011, Casey was named the Texans starting fullback.
Casey signed a three-year, $14.6 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 12, 2013. [6] [7] Casey was released by the Eagles on February 19, 2015. [8]
Casey signed a one-year deal with the Broncos on April 11, 2015. He was reunited with his former Texans head coach, Gary Kubiak.
On October 9, 2015, Casey was released from the Broncos to make room for Derek Wolfe, who came off a four-game suspension.
On January 13, 2016, it was announced that Casey had joined the coaching staff of the Houston Cougars football team as an offensive analyst. [9]
On December 22, 2016, was promoted to tight ends coach under new Houston head coach, Major Applewhite. [10]
On February 7, 2019 Casey was hired by the Bengals to be their tight ends coach.
Major Lee Applewhite is an American football coach and former player who has been the head coach for the South Alabama Jaguars since January of 2024. Prior to that he was the head coach at the University of Houston from 2017 to 2018, where he previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He started his coaching career in 2003 and in addition to South Alabama and Houston he has held various positions at Texas, Syracuse, Rice and Alabama.
Tony Scheffler is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football and baseball for the Western Michigan Broncos. He was selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2006 NFL draft.
Owen Gerald Daniels is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Wisconsin Badgers, and was selected by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft. He is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos. As a member of the Broncos, he helped the team win Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers.
Joel Clifford Dreessen is a former American football tight end. He was selected by the New York Jets in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. He played college football at Colorado State. Dreessen also played for the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos.
James Brown is a former American football quarterback. He was the starting quarterback of the Texas Longhorns from 1994 to 1997. At the time, he was only the second black quarterback to guide Texas through an entire season, and is credited for "opening doors" for future black quarterbacks at Texas, such as Casey Thompson and Vince Young.
Donald Wayne Hollas is a former American football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons during the 1990s. He played college football for Rice University and thereafter was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL draft. Hollas also played for the Oakland Raiders.

Zachary Adam Ertz is an American professional football tight end for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Stanford Cardinal, earning unanimous All-American honors in 2012 before being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft. Ertz played nine seasons with the Eagles, making three Pro Bowls and winning Super Bowl LII with them. He holds the NFL record for most receptions in a season by a tight end and has also been a member of the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions. His wife Julie is a former member of the United States women's national soccer team.
Mychal Rashawn Rivera is a former American football tight end. He played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers and was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft.
Ryan Francis Griffin is an American football tight end who is a free agent. He played college football at Connecticut, and was selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft. He has also previously played for the New York Jets and Chicago Bears.
Colton John Fiedorowicz is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft after playing college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Fiedorowicz played his entire four-year professional career with the Texans before retiring during the 2018 offseason, citing recurrent concussions.
Lawrence Godfrey "Trey" Burton III is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Florida Gators and was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2014, and he won Super Bowl LII with the team in his final season with the Eagles, including helping execute the Philly Special. Burton also played for the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts.
