The Lancia Stratos Zero or Lancia Stratos HF Zero is a grand tourer concept sports car from the Italian automobile manufacturers Bertone and Lancia. It was presented at the 1970 Turin Auto Show, predating the production Lancia Stratos by three years. [1] It is currently owned by Phillip Sarofim. [2]
The concept car was created by Marcello Gandini (chief designer at Bertone). They called it "Stratos 0" after the space-age stratosphere then in vogue at the time. [3] [4] [5]
It was successfully used for marketing by Scuderia Lancia in relation with its Lancia Stratos [6] (and GT Stradale road car) version which was produced in 492 units between 1973 and 1978, and featured a Ferrari Dino 246 GT/GTS (1969) 2.4 liter V6 engine for a power output of 142 kW (190 PS; 187 hp), which led to a series of wins and domination of the world rally championships in 1974, 1975 and 1976.
The concept car was created by Bertone using the chassis of a crashed Lancia Fulvia HF1600 rally car. [7] [8]
Its angular trapezoidal ultra-futuristic science fiction design (for its time) styling is ultra low and aerodynamically shaped, with a height of only 84 centimeters. The bodywork is made of fiberglass, with an original copper color scheme, a fastback rear body shape, a retractable steering wheel for easier access to the cockpit, and a flip-open front-windshield door, and integrated bucket seats. The instrumentation was on a digital control screen, which was visionary at the time. [9]
The aeronautical design is inspired, among other things, by the supersonic planes of the time and by competing concept cars such as the General Motors Firebird III (1959), Chevrolet Testudo (1963), Alfa Romeo Carabo (1968), Alfa Romeo 33.2 (1968), Alfa Romeo Iguana (1969), Autobianchi Runabout (1969) and Ferrari Modulo (1970).
The Stratos Zero in turn may have[ according to whom? ] inspired designs such as the Maserati Boomerang (1971), De Tomaso Pantera (1971), Fiat X1/9 (1972), Vector (1972), BMW Turbo (1972), Lamborghini Urraco (1973), Maserati Khamsin (1974), Lamborghini Bravo (1974), Lamborghini Countach (1974), Lotus Esprit (1976), Dome Zero (1978), Lancia Medusa (1980), DeLorean DMC-12 (1981), Peugeot Quasar (1984), Ferrari Testarossa (1984), or Maserati Birdcage75th (2005).
The Lancia Stratos Zero is driven by a mid-rear mounted Lancia V4 engine from a Lancia Fulvia HF1600 Rally, with a displacement of 1.6 liters and a power of 86 kW (115 PS; 113 hp). [10]
The concept car was exhibited for a long time at the Bertone museum near Turin. It was sold at auction, among others, at the 2011 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este elegance competition, [11] and has since been exhibited by its various successive private owners in various elegance competitions and car museums around the world. [12] [13] In 2023, Lancia Stratos Zero has been filmed in one such exhibition at Sankt Moritz, Switzerland. [14]
On August 18th, 2024, the Stratos Zero was entered into the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, competing in the "Wedge-shaped Concept Cars and Prototypes (Early)" class. In addition to winning 1st place in this class and being one of four contenders for Best in Show, Kazunori Yamauchi awarded the Zero 2024's Gran Turismo Special Award. [15] [16] [17]
The Lancia Stratos Zero appears in the 1988 Michael Jackson musical film Moonwalker by Jerry Kramer and Colin Chilvers. In the "Smooth Criminal" section, the character of Michael Jackson is cornered by gangsters, turns into a bullet-proof Lancia Stratos Zero, and gets away. [18]
Giovanni Michelotti was one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century. His notable contributions were for Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and Triumph marques. He was also associated with truck designs for Leyland Motors, and with designs for British Leyland after the merger of Leyland and BMC.
Lancia is an Italian car manufacturer and a subsidiary of Stellantis Europe, which is currently a Stellantis division. The present legal entity of Lancia was formed in January 2007 when its corporate parent reorganised its businesses, but its history is traced back to Lancia & C., a manufacturing concern founded in 1906 in Torino by Vincenzo Lancia (1881–1937) and Claudio Fogolin. It became part of Fiat in 1969.
Giorgetto Giugiaro is an Italian automotive designer. He has worked on supercars and popular everyday vehicles. He was born in Garessio, Cuneo, Piedmont. Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. He was awarded the Compasso d'Oro industrial design award six times.
Gruppo Bertone, commonly known as Bertone, was an Italian industrial design company which specialized in car styling, coachbuilding and manufacturing. It was also a car manufacturing company.
Marcello Gandini was an Italian car designer, widely known for his work with the Italian car design house, Bertone, where his work included designing the Alfa Romeo Carabo and Montreal, Lancia Stratos Zero, Maserati Khamsin, Ferrari GT4, Fiat X1/9, and several Lamborghinis, including the Bravo, Miura, Marzal, Espada, Urraco, and Countach. Gandini himself said his design interests prioritised vehicle architecture, construction, assembly, and mechanisms over styling.

The Lancia Stratos HF, known as Lancia Stratos, is a rear mid-engined sports car designed for rallying, made by Italian car manufacturer Lancia. It was highly successful in competition, winning the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976; as well as winning the 1974 Targa Florio, winning the Tour de France Automobile five times and the Giro d'Italia automobilistico three times.
Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera is an Italian automobile coachbuilder. Originally established in Milan in 1925, Carrozzeria Touring became well known for both the beauty of its designs and patented superleggera construction methods. The business folded in 1966. In 2006 its brands and trademarks were purchased and a new firm was established nearby to provide automotive design, engineering, coachbuilding, homologation services, non-automotive industrial design, and restoration of historic vehicles.

Pininfarina S.p.A. is an Italian car design firm and coachbuilder, with headquarters in Cambiano, Turin, Italy. The company was founded by Battista "Pinin" Farina in 1930. On 14 December 2015, the Indian multinational Mahindra Group acquired 76.06% of Pininfarina S.p.A. for about €168 million.
The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is a mid-engine sports car built by Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo. It was the fastest commercially available car for the standing kilometer upon its introduction. 18 examples were produced between 1967 and 1969. "Stradale" is a term often used by Italian car manufacturers to indicate a street-legal version of a racing car; indeed the 33 Stradale was derived from the Tipo 33 sports prototype. Built in an attempt by Alfa Romeo to make some of its racing technology available to the public, it was also the most expensive automobile for sale to the public in 1968 at US$17,000.
Giuseppe Bertone, also called "Nuccio", was an automobile designer and constructor. He took over Carrozzeria Bertone from his father, Giovanni after World War II, growing the small business to a car building and designing powerhouse. After racing Fiat, O.S.C.A., Maserati, and Ferrari, Bertone moved to construction, agreeing to build his first car, a series of 200 MGs, at the 1952 Turin Motor Show. He drew attention at the Paris Motor Show that year with an Abarth concept, and was chosen to design the replacement for the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante. These so-called BAT cars used the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint chassis. Bertone is also responsible for designing the famous Lambretta GP/DL range of scooters and the Luna line of scooters.
