Express routes

SamTrans discontinued its last express route, KX, by merging it into line 398 in August 2018. Since then, the samTrans board adopted the Express Bus Feasibility Study on December 5, 2018. [3] [4] The agency has recommended launching six new express routes, starting with two pilot routes scheduled to begin in summer 2019. The first route will travel between San Francisco and Foster City along US 101, and the second route will travel between San Francisco (Divisadero and Geary) and Palo Alto via I-280 and 19th Avenue in San Francisco. In the second phase, two new express routes will take advantage of managed lanes that will be added to US 101; one will provide service between San Bruno and East Palo Alto, and the other will run between San Mateo (via park-and-ride) and downtown San Francisco. The fifth and sixth new express routes will provide service between San Mateo and western San Francisco, and between Burlingame and downtown San Francisco. [5] [6]

An early-morning weekday express route with limited trips, separate from the pilot program, was introduced on February 11, 2019. Route 713 provides replacement service for BART between 4:00 am and 5:00 am while seismic retrofit work is performed in the Transbay Tube. It runs between the Salesforce Transit Center and Millbrae station via SFO. [7]

The first new express route, designated FCX, started service on August 19, 2019. FCX operates two trips in each direction with headways of approximately 30 minutes during peak weekday commute hours, using recent buses that feature onboard Wi-Fi. [8] [9]

 • Route operated as an express service (via Highway 101 and 9th/10th Streets) between San Francisco International Airport and downtown San Francisco.
 • Passengers with luggage were prohibited from traveling on the express portion of the route until 2013 due to a lawsuit filed in the 1970s by a private shuttle service called San Francisco Airporter, which contended that SamTrans' public subsidy gave it an unfair competitive advantage. Although San Francisco Airporter was sold in 2001 and ceased airport service in 2006, the luggage ban continued until June 1, 2013, when SamTrans was cleared to do so by the Federal Transit Administration. [17]

Caltrain Express Faster San Francisco-San Jose rail service

The Caltrain Express (CTX) project was implemented from 2002 to 2004 and led to the establishment of the Baby Bullet express service, which shortened the transit time between San Francisco and San Jose, and certain stations in between. New locomotives and rolling stock were purchased for dedicated express service, bypassing most stations; quad-track overtake sections were added in two locations along the Peninsula Corridor right-of-way to allow express trains to pass slower local trains that were making all stops; tracks were also upgraded with continuous-welded rail; a centralized traffic control system was added; and crossovers were added every few miles to allow single-tracking trains around disabled trains. Congresswoman Jackie Speier, then serving as a California State Senator, is credited with securing the funding for CTX and one of the new locomotives acquired for the project is named for her as a result. During commute hours, the Baby Bullet is up to 20% faster than driving south from San Francisco to San Jose.
