List of international prime ministerial trips made by Nawaz Sharif

According to the report submitted by the former Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif former Prime minister Nawaz Sharif made more than 65 international trips in his third premiership between June 2013 and February 2016. [1] [2] Since his tenure ended on 28 July 2017, the exact number of trips made during his tenure are not officially available. According to another report submitted to the federal cabinet Nawaz Sharif spent 262 days abroad during his tenure. [3] Between June 2013 and February 2016 he made 10 foreign trips in 2013, 11 in 2014, 23 in 2015, and 9 each in 2016 and 2017.

According to Khawaja Asif's report, the foreign visits cost the national exchequer more than Rs 1 billion for visits between June 2013 and February 2016. These visits accompanied 631 officers with him. [2] According to another report submitted to the federal cabinet Nawaz Sharif spent 262 days abroad during his tenure. Among the money spent Rs. 30m is spent on tips and Rs. 60m on gifts. The report revealed that a total of Rs 1.84bn was spent on foreign trips by the former prime minister. [3]

The lavish spending in foreign trips are criticised by neutral observers of international media. [4] [5] [6] In May, 2016 the Lahore High Court took notice of lavish spending in foreign tours on public money. The court asked to explain 17 visits to Britain with two months spent in the U.K. The court also questioned how days listed as transit closed 137.8 million rupees. [7] [8] [9]

General elections were held in Pakistan on Saturday 11 May 2013 to elect the members of the 14th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) led by Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led by President Asif Ali Zardari and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led by Imran Khan. Prior to the elections, the ruling PPP formed an alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and Awami National Party, while the main opposition party, the PML-N allied with the Pakistan Muslim League (F) and Baloch parties. The PTI led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, also emerged as a key-player.

The Nandipur Power Project is a 425 MW combined cycle thermal power plant situated at Nandipur near Gujranwala in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Being constructed by the China Dongfang Electric Corporation, the project was completed in March 2015. The initial cost of the project was Rs. 27 billion, but this escalated during the revised project cycle-1 and totalled Rs. 58.42 bn at completion. The power plant faced a series of hiccups during and after launching its commercial operations. Prior and after construction, the project continued to attract a number of court cases, inquiries, investigations, audits, and political and commercial disputes. The plant collapsed after 5 days of operation, launching a series of inquiries ordered by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Third Nawaz Sharif ministry</span> Cabinet of Pakistan (2013–2017)

The third Nawaz Sharif ministry was formed at noon PKT on 5 June 2013 when Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif became the prime minister of Pakistan for the third time. Pakistan Ehtesab March was a public protest march organized by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in response to the Panama Papers in 2016. A series of rallies were held against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, over the claims of corruption of the Sharif family. The march began on 7 August 2016 from Peshawar.

The Abbasi ministry was formed by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on 4 August 2017 to begin a new government following the disqualification of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif until the end of May 2018 when justice Nasirul Mulk took oath as new caretaker prime minister. The ministry, a Pakistan Muslim League (N) majority government, succeeded the third Sharif ministry, which was formed following the 2013 general election and had dissolved in the July 2017 after Nawaz Sharif was disqualification by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to hold the office of Prime Minister.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">No-confidence motion against Imran Khan</span> 2022 removal from office of the Pakistani prime minister

In April 2022, a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan led to his removal as the prime minister of Pakistan. Based largely on the Westminster system of legislature, the prime minister commands confidence of the majority of the lower house of Parliament, the National Assembly of Pakistan, under clause (2A) of Article 91 of the Constitution. Numerous opposition parties joined forces to file the motion of no confidence against Imran Khan in the National Assembly. It ultimately led to the removal of Khan from office as a majority passed the motion in the Lower House.
