The ARIA Singles Chart ranks the best-performing singles in Australia. Its data, published by the Australian Recording Industry Association, is based collectively on each single's weekly physical and digital sales. [2] In 2014, fourteen singles claimed the top spot. Eight acts achieved their first number-one single in Australia: A Great Big World, 5 Seconds of Summer, Sheppard, Ed Sheeran, The Madden Brothers, Paloma Faith, Meghan Trainor and Mark Ronson. [3] 5 Seconds of Summer, Sheppard, Justice Crew and The Veronicas were the only Australian artists that achieved a number-one single in 2014.
Sheeran had two number-one singles during the year for "Sing" and "Thinking Out Loud". Taylor Swift also earned two number-one singles during the year for "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space". Pharrell Williams' "Happy" was the longest-running number-one single of 2014, having topped the ARIA Singles Chart for twelve weeks. Justice Crew's "Que Sera" was the second longest-running number-one single, with nine consecutive weeks at the top spot. Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" stayed at number one for five consecutive weeks, while Trainor's "All About That Bass" topped the chart for four weeks. Sheppard's "Geronimo", Swift's "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space", The Veronicas' "You Ruin Me" and Ronson's "Uptown Funk" each spent three consecutive weeks at the number one spot.

Australian pop duo The Veronicas have released five studio albums, two live albums, one compilation album, three extended plays, twenty-four singles, fifteen music videos and two video albums. Their debut studio album, The Secret Life Of..., was released in Australia in October 2005. Influenced by pop rock, pop punk and teen pop genres, the album was successful in Australia, where it reached number two and gained quadruple Platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The album was supported by four singles: "She Looks So Perfect", "Don't Stop", "Amnesia", and "Good Girls". Musically, the album is rooted in the pop punk, pop rock and power pop genres. Before the album's release, the band was the opening act for One Direction in two of their concert tours. To promote the album, 5 Seconds of Summer embarked on their first global headlining tour, entitled Rock Out with Your Socks Out Tour between May and September 2015.

"You Ruin Me" is a song by Australian pop duo The Veronicas from their self-titled third studio album. Produced by DNA, the recording is the lead single from the album and their first musical release since "Lolita" in 2012. The track, which was released on 19 September 2014, was co-written by Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci along with The Veronicas' twins Lisa Origliasso and Jessica Origliasso. It became the duo's second number-one single in their native Australia, topping the ARIA Singles Chart for three weeks, and it reached the top 20 in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
