Lovlina Borgohain (born 2 October 1997) is an Indian boxer. She won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in the women's welterweight event, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. [1] [2] She won gold medal at 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships and bronze medals at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships and the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. [3] [4] [5] Borgohain is the first female athlete and the second boxer from Assam to represent the state in the Olympics. [6] In 2020, she became the sixth person from Assam to receive Arjuna Award. Early life

Borgohain was born on 2 October 1997, and hails from Baramukhia village, Golaghat district, Assam. [8] [9] Her parents are Tiken and Mamoni Borgohain. Her father Tiken is a small-scale businessman and struggled financially to support his daughter's ambition. A former Muay Thai practitioner, Lovlina, as the youngest of three sister-siblings, became interested in boxing after seeing her twin sisters, Licha and Lima, take up kickboxing and followed the same trail. [10] The Sports Authority of India held trials at her high school Barpathar Girls High School, where Borgohain participated. She was noticed and selected by renowned Coach Padum Chandra Bodo at the SAI STC Guwahati from 2012 to learn basics of boxing and to achieve the excellence in boxing. [11] [12] She was later coached by Sandhya Gurung. [13] [14]

Career

She won gold medal at the 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament in New Delhi in 2018 and silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament in Guwahati. [15]

Borgohain's career's biggest break came when she was selected to participate in the 2018 Commonwealth Games welterweight boxing category. However, her announcement was the subject of controversy after it was found out that she hadn't received any official intimation about her selection. She found out about her selection after the story broke at a major media outlet. [9] [16] At the Commonwealth Games, she lost to Sandy Ryan from the UK in the quarterfinals. Sandy Ryan eventually went on to win gold in that category.[ citation needed ]

Her selection in the 2018 Commonwealth Games was attributed to her success at the inaugural India Open – an international boxing championship held in February 2018 – where she won a gold medal in the welterweight category. [17] [9] She had also won the bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam in November 2017 [18] and the bronze medal at the President's Cup held in Astana in June 2017. [19] [20] [21]

She later won a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia in June 2018 and a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland in September 2018. [22] [23]

2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships

She represented India for the first time at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship, held in New Delhi, where she won the bronze medal in the welterweight category on 23 November 2018. [3]

2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships

In 2019, Borgohain got selected for her second Women's World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia, from 3–13 October without trials. [24] Borgohain defeated Morocco's Bel Ahbib Oumayma 5–0 in her round of 16 bout. [25] She was defeated by China's Yang Liu in the 69 kg category semi-final by 2-3 and had to settle with the bronze medal. [5]

2020 Olympics qualifying event

In March 2020, Borgohain secured the Olympic berth in the 69 kg with a 5–0 win over Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. With this, she has become the first ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics. [6] She lost to the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships silver-medallist Gu Hong of China in a unanimous 5-0 verdict and signed off with a bronze medal at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers. [26]

Borgohain trained at Assisi, Italy from 15 October to 5 December 2020 for World Olympic qualifying event scheduled for May – June 2021. [27]

2020 Tokyo Olympics

Borgohain is the first female athlete and the second boxer from Assam to represent the state in the Olympics. [6] She defeated the German boxer Nadine Apetz in the primary rounds and on 30 July 2021, she defeated Taiwan's Chen Nien-chin and which assured her a medal. [28] [29] [30] India women's boxing team head coach Raffaelle Bergamesco told The Times of India in an interview, "She wanted to win and that was a fundamental change. Lovlina is a girl who is very attached to her family, to her fellow citizens. I tried to motivate her by shouting that the whole of India was watching her and she could write her own story" [31] In the semifinals she lost to the world no. 1 and eventual gold medalist Busenaz Sürmeneli and took home the bronze medal. IBA Women's World Boxing Championships

2022

She lost to Cindy Ngamba of Fair Chance Team 1–4 in the pre-quarter finals. [34] Borgohain had again defeated former world champion Chen Nien-Chin in the first round. [34]

2023

Competing in the 75 kg category, Borgohain won the gold medal defeating Australia's Caitlin Parker. [35]

2024 Olympics

Borgohain participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women’s 75kg category. She defeated Norwegian boxer S. Hofstad in her first match. In the quarter final match , she lost to Q.Li of People’s Republic of China 5-0 and ended the Paris Olympics. [36]

Personal life

In 2019, Borgohain signed up with sports management firm Infinity Optimal Solutions (IOS) which will handle her endorsements and commercial interests. [45]

In 2022, Borgohain was appointed as deputy superintendent of police by Assam Government. [46] [47] In May 2022, she was elected as the chair and a voting member on the board of directors for International Boxing Association (amateur) Athletes' Committee. [48]

Shiva Thapa is an Indian boxer. Thapa participated in the 2012 London Olympics, and was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics. Thapa is ranked 3rd in the bantamweight category in the AIBA Men's World Ranking. He is the third Indian to clinch gold at the Asian Games. Thapa is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships. Thapa has been elected as a member of the International Boxing Association (amateur) Athletes Committee.

In India, the sport of boxing is governed by the Boxing Federation of India. The majority of boxing in India occurs nationally and internationally as amateur boxing, with only a few boxers opting to pursue professional boxing. This has been attributed to a lack of promotional companies, facilities, and revenue. However, India is a regular medal-holder at international tournaments including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, and Olympics. Boxing has been rising in popularity in certain states, particularly in Haryana. The Bhiwani Boxing Club in Bhiwani, Haryana has produced medalists in various weight classes.

Nikhat Zareen is an Indian boxer and a two-time world champion. She won a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Women's Youth & Junior World Boxing Championships held in Antalya. Zareen won gold medals at the 2022 Istanbul, and 2023 New Delhi IBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She also won gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. She won the bronze medal in the Light flyweight event in the 2022 Asian Games.

She won gold medals at the 2011 National Games of India and the 2012 and 2014 National championships in the flyweight (51kgs) division. She was the only Indian pugilist who bagged the gold medal at the Arafura Games. She signed up with Sporty Boxing Private Limited, which is referred to as the commercial arm of the Indian Boxing Council (IBC), the licensing body for professional boxers in India.

Chen Nien-chin is a Taiwanese middleweight boxer. In 2016, she won a bronze medal at the world championships, but was eliminated in her first bout at the Rio Olympics. She is a native of Hualien County. Chen is of Austronesian Taiwanese descent, with one parent being Amis and the other being Bunun. Chen was diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin lymphoma cancer in 2019, recovered in 2020 after intensive chemotherapy. After recovery, she competed in 2020 and 2024 Olympics in Welterweight boxing.

Gaurav Bidhuri is an Indian boxer from Mandanpur Khadar village, New Delhi who competes in the 56 kg bantamweight division. He is ranked 11th in the World by AIBA in the year 2018. He won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Boxing Championships held at Hamburg, Germany. He is the only 4th Indian boxer who got a medal at World Boxing Championship. He is currently employed with Indian Railways.

Subedar Amit Panghal is an Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and an amateur boxer. He won silver medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in the Flyweight division. Panghal won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games. Amit Panghal has received top seeding in the 52 kg category. Amit Panghal is the reigning Asian Games champion and a world championships silver-medalist Asian Elite Boxing Championships Panghal failed to defend his gold medal, that he won in 2019, against reigning Olympic and world champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan to finish second-best in Dubai.

Jamuna Boro is an Indian former boxer. She won bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She won gold medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament in Guwahati. She won gold medal at the 23rd President's Cup 2019 Boxing International Open Tournament in Labuan Bajo. She won bronze medal at the 5th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship in Hisar (city). Boro resigned from Assam Rifles and was appointed as excise inspector by Assam Government. She quit amateur boxing after the 5th Elite Women's National Boxing Championships.

Ankushita Boro is an Indian boxer. She won gold medal at the 2017 AIBA Youth Women's World Boxing Championships. She won gold medal in the first North East Olympic Games 2018, Imphal. She won silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament and a gold at the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games (KYIG) 2020, both held in Guwahati. She also won 'The Best Boxer' title in the 2017 AIBA Youth Women's World Boxing Championships. She won bronze medal at the 5th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship in Hisar.

Bhagyabati Kachari is an Indian boxer. She won a silver medal at the 9th Nation's Cup boxing tournament held at Sombor, Serbia. She won a gold medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati. She won a bronze medal at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament held in Bangkok. She won a gold medal at the 4th Elite Women's National Boxing Championship held in Kannur, Kerala.

Simranjit Kaur Baatth is an Indian amateur boxer from Punjab, India. She has represented India internationally since 2011. Kaur won a bronze medal for India at the 2018 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships. She was a part of the Indian women's boxing contingent and won a gold medal at the Ahmet Comert International Boxing Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey in the 64 kg category. Baatth is the first female boxer from Punjab to participate in the Olympics. Simranjit won silver at the 2019 Asian Championships and bronze at the 2018 World Championships.
