History

European Mariner was launched in 1977 as Salahala for the Salahala Shipping Company. She was chartered by Gilvani for use on the Genoa - Malta - Pireus - Alexandria route. In 1990, she was sold to Crescent Shipping and renamed Merchant Valiant and initially put into service on the Warrenpoint - Heysham route before moving to the Larne - Ardrossan route on charter to Pandoro. She was sold to Pandoro in 1995 and renamed Lion on 15 October 1995. [1] In January 1998, she was transferred to P&O Irish Sea [2] following the merger of Pandoro and P&O European Ferries (Felixstowe) Ltd and she was renamed European Highlander. On 8 November 1999 she ran aground at Ardrossan. A new route was opened in 2001 running from Troon instead of Ardrossan, and European Highlander was renamed European Mariner on 30 June 2001 as the Highlander name was required for a new ship. European Mariner served the Larne - Troon route until January 2002. She then was chartered to various shipping companies in 2002, including Color Line, Commodore Ferries, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Norse Island Ferries and Seatruck Ferries. [1] On 6 November 2002 a lorry was washed overboard in storm conditions whilst European Mariner was on the Aberdeen - Lerwick route and she diverted to Invergordon. On 2 December, she came to the aid of the Merchant Venture which suffered an engine failure during a gale. Merchant Venture was escorted to Lerwick. [3] In January 2003, European Mariner returned to service on the Larne - Troon route. [1]

In 2006, European Mariner suffered damage to one of her propeller shafts in an accident at Troon. [4] She ran for a few weeks on only one engine until repairs could be made at Birkenhead. [5] In 2007, European Mariner was chartered to transport blades for wind turbines from Esbjerg that were destined for use on the turbines being erected as part of the Scroby Sands wind farm. [4]

In May 2011 P&O Ferries announced that the European Mariner was to be replaced by the Norcape. The European Mariner operated her last service for P&O between Troon and Larne on 9 July 2011. She sailed for the shipbreakers yard in Turkey where she beached at Aliağa and scrapped.

During her delivery voyage on 9 June 1998, as Catalonia, she set the record for the fastest Atlantic Eastbound Record, previously held by another Incat craft Hoverspeed Great Britain. She made the 3,125 mi (5,029 km) run from Manhattan, US to Tarifa, Spain in 3 days 7 hours 54 minutes, traveling at an average speed of 38.877 knots.

MS <i>Moondance</i>

MS Sevenhill is a ro-ro freight ferry built in 1978. It is a sister ship to Riverdance. She was probably best known for its time at Seatruck Ferries, named Moondance. The vessel was originally built for Emadala Shipping.

Seatruck Ferries is a UK-based freight-only ferry company which commenced services in 1996. It is subsidiary of CLdN. It operates out of four ports on the Irish Sea, including Heysham and Liverpool.

MS <i>Celtic Star</i> Roll-on roll-off ferry

Ippotis was a roll-on/roll-off ferry owned and operated by Eptanisos Maritime on the Ibiza–Barcelona route.

MS <i>Clipper Ranger</i>

MS Clipper Ranger is a freight ferry built in 1998, which was in service with Seatruck Ferries on the Heysham–Belfast route until the latter half of 2012. In September 2013, she was chartered to Caledonian MacBrayne for the freight service between Ullapool and Stornoway.

Hildasay is a 7,606 GT roll-on/roll-off ferry which was built by Astilleros de Huelva, Spain in 1999 as Leili for the Estonian Shipping Company. During a charter to Crowley Maritime she was renamed Port Everglades Express, reverting to Leili when the charter ended. In 2005, she was sold to Greece and renamed RR Shield. In 2008, she was sold to Seatruck Ferries and renamed Shield. In January 2010 she was chartered to NorthLink Ferries and renamed Hildasay.

MS <i>Anna Marine</i>

MS Anna Marine was a ro-ro ferry that operated on the Stena Line service from Larne, Northern Ireland to Fleetwood, England.

MS <i>ANT 1</i>

MS ANT 1 was a ro-ro ferry operated by Stena Line between Larne, Northern Ireland and Fleetwood, England. The ferry did not carry passengers, insteading solely carrying freight.

MV <i>European Causeway</i>

The MV European Causeway is a ferry operated by P&O Ferries. She was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shimonoseki shipyard in Japan.

MV <i>Muirneag</i>

MV Muirneag is a ro-ro freight ferry, built in 1979 as MV Mercandian Carrier. From 1986 to 2002, she was named MV Belard, serving initially across the Irish Sea. MS Norcape was a ro-ro freight vessel built for the British ferry company P&O Ferries. She was built in 1979 by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Japan as Puma. Later that year, she was renamed Tipperary and began service with B&I Line, operating between Liverpool and Dublin. After 10 years she was transferred to P&O North Sea Ferries and renamed as Norcape. She was laid up in Liverpool in 2010 before going to refit and transferring to the Larne Troon route. She was sold for scrap following a grounding in Troon and cut up in Aliağa, Turkey.
