Life
Van Rij grew up in Wassenaar, and he started his career in 1983 as a tax assistant at a tax firm. [1] In addition, he became a member of the Wassenaar Municipal Council in 1986. He moved to professional services firm Ernst & Young (EY) in 1994, and he became a partner in January 1998. He was party chair of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) from 1999 until 2001. [2] He also served as a Senator, a part-time position in the Netherlands, from 2015 to 2019. As a senator, his portfolio consisted of tax affairs, among other themes. On 15 February 2020, Van Rij was appointed as the Island Governor of Sint-Eustatius, and he left EY. [3] After this, Van Rij was interim party chairman of the CDA from 3 April until 11 December 2021.
On 10 January 2022, Van Rij became State Secretary for Finance in the fourth Rutte cabinet. In an interview with newspaper Trouw , Van Rij told that he had declined to succeed Ronald Plasterk as informateur during the 2023–2024 cabinet formation, partly due to the CDA not being part of the talks. After the new right-wing governing coalition – consisting of the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), New Social Contract (NSC), and the Farmer–Citizen Movement (BBB) – had agreed that their party leaders would remain in parliament, Van Rij was one of three candidates identified to serve as prime minister in the resulting cabinet. He pulled out after his first interview, and Dick Schoof was eventually chosen. [4] [5] Van Rij's term as state secretary ended on 2 July 2024, when the Schoof cabinet was sworn in. [6]
He started serving as deputy Executive Director of the Dutch-Belgian constituency at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. on 1 November 2024. [2] [7]
Personal life
Van Rij is in his second marriage with his American-born wife Courtney. The couple kept their house on Sint Eustatius after moving back to the Dutch mainland. [1] Van Rij has six children. [4]

In 2023, he was nominated to take on the role of Frans Timmermans as EU Commissioner, being responsible for climate action. On the 22nd of July 2024 it was announced that Hoekstra is nominated for a new term of EU Commissioner on behalf of the Schoof cabinet.
Rob Arnoldus Adrianus Jetten is a Dutch politician. He has been the Leader of the Democrats 66 (D66) party since August 2023 and a member of the House of Representatives since December 2023. He previously served as Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands from January 2024 to July 2024 and Minister for Climate and Energy Policy from 2022 to 2024.
Sophia Theodora Monique "Sophie" Hermans is a Dutch politician currently serving as Second Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Minister of Climate and Green Growth in the Schoof cabinet. Eelco Heinen is a Dutch politician serving since 2 July 2024 as the Minister of Finance. A member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), he held a seat in the House of Representatives between March 2021 and July 2024, and he previously worked as a party staffer.
Ruben Pieter Brekelmans is a Dutch politician serving as the minister of defence in the Schoof cabinet since 2024. She did not return afterwards, as the Schoof cabinet was formed in July 2024. Heijnen was previously head of the Brussels campus of her alma mater Maastricht University, and she was active in local politics in Maastricht as municipal councilor (2010–18) and alderwoman (2018–22).
Jennifer Nicolien van Vroonhoven-Kok is a Dutch politician who has a seat in the House of Representatives. She was the second candidate of the New Social Contract party in the 2023 general election. From 2002 to 2010, she held a seat in the House on behalf of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). From 2010 to 2011, she was for a member of the municipal council of The Hague and from 7 May 2014 to 17 December 2017 she was an alderman in the municipality of Hilversum, both for CDA.
Following the Dutch general election of 22 November 2023, a process of cabinet formation was started, resulting in the formation of the Schoof cabinet on 2 July 2024, comprising the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), New Social Contract (NSC) and the Farmer–Citizen Movement (BBB). Despite intentions to form an extra-parliamentary cabinet, the cabinet is generally considered a parliamentary cabinet.

The Schoof cabinet is the cabinet of the Netherlands, sworn in on 2 July 2024. Led by independent politician and civil servant Dick Schoof as prime minister of the Netherlands, the cabinet was formed by the Party for Freedom (PVV), the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the New Social Contract (NSC) and the Farmer–Citizen Movement (BBB) after the 2023 Dutch general election.
Nora Achahbar is a Dutch jurist, judge and politician of the New Social Contract (NSC) party. She served as State Secretary for Benefits and Customs in the Schoof cabinet between July and November 2024.
The 2025 Netherlands budget was presented to the States General on 17 September 2024, a day also known as Prinsjesdag. It was the first budget of the Schoof cabinet and of Minister of Finance Eelco Heinen.
