Melothria scabra, commonly known as the cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber, Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon, or pepquinos, [2] [3] [4] is a species of flowering plant in the cucurbit family grown for its edible fruit. [5] Its native range spans Mexico to Venezuela. [1] Cucumis melo Agrestis and Cucumis callosus is cultivated as Chibber Fruit (Wild cucumber) or Kachri in South Asia and can also grow as weed. Fruits are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. [6] It may have been eaten by indigenous peoples before the European colonization of the Americas began. [6]

Description

Melothria scabra is a vine similar in morphology to Melothria pendula . [7] It has a climbing habit, and typically grows 2.5–3 m (8.2–9.8 ft) tall. [5] It is fast growing: [5] germination under favourable conditions takes approximately 10 days, with plants reaching maturity in approximately 60–75 days. [6] [8] It is a perennial species, but as it is not frost hardy it is often grown as an annual. [5] Its leaves have three or five lobes, and are 3–7 cm (1.2–2.8 in) in length and width. [9] The leaf margin is undulate or dentate, the apex is caudate, and the leaf base is cordate. [9] The leaf surface is scabrous; the upper surface is covered with small hairs called trichomes. [9] Similar to some types of cucumber, [10] these plants are monoecious, producing both male (staminate) and female (pistillate) flowers on the same plant. [9] [11] Flowers are small and yellow, and are approximately 4 mm (0.2 in) in diameter. [5] Unusually for the cucurbits, the female flowers appear before the male flowers. [6] These plants can pollinate themselves, but the individual flowers are not self-fertile. Each plant can produce hundreds of fruits, [8] which develop at the base of the female flowers (the ovaries are inferior). [12] Fruits are olive-shaped, [5] grow to 2.5–4 cm (1.0–1.6 in) in length, and 1.5–2.5 cm (0.6–1.0 in) in width, and are green with dark green stripes. [7] In contrast to the fruits of most other wild species in the cucurbit family, the fruit of Melothria scabra has a sweet rather than bitter flesh. [13] Plants are drought resistant and pest-resistant relative to other cucumbers. [14]

Etymology

Binomial name

The genus name Melothria is from Ancient Greek μηλοθρων: mēlothrōn 'kind of white grape' in reference to small grapevine fruits born by the genus. The specific epithet scabra is Latin for 'rough, scabby'.

Common names

The English language common name 'cucamelon' arose in the 1980s; it is a portmanteau of 'cucumber' and 'melon'. [15] The Spanish language common name ' sandita ' translates as 'little watermelon'; [14] its etymology is sandía 'watermelon' + ita, a suffix used to indicate something is small. [16] [17]

Distribution and habitat

Melothria scabra is native to Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, [lower-roman 1] Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela, [1] where it grows in forests and thickets. [7]

Diseases

Melothria scabra is susceptible to infection by Pseudoperonospora cubensis , [18] [19] [20] a plant pathogen that causes cucurbit downy mildew. [21] It is also susceptible to infection by another plant pathogen, Podosphaera xanthii , which causes powdery mildew. [22] Plants are reported to be susceptible to infection by Cucumber mosaic virus . [23]

Cultivation

Melothria scabra is cultivated as a minor crop for its fruits, [13] which are eaten raw or pickled. [24]

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that affects a wide range of plants. Powdery mildew diseases are caused by many different species of ascomycete fungi in the order Erysiphales. Powdery mildew is one of the easier plant diseases to identify, as its symptoms are quite distinctive. Infected plants display white powdery spots on the leaves and stems. The lower leaves are the most affected, but the mildew can appear on any above-ground part of the plant. As the disease progresses, the spots get larger and denser as large numbers of asexual spores are formed, and the mildew may spread up and down the length of the plant.

Downy mildew refers to any of several types of oomycete microbes that are obligate parasites of plants. Downy mildews exclusively belong to the Peronosporaceae family. In commercial agriculture, they are a particular problem for growers of crucifers, grapes and vegetables that grow on vines. The prime example is Peronospora farinosa featured in NCBI-Taxonomy and HYP3. This pathogen does not produce survival structures in the northern states of the United States, and overwinters as live mildew colonies in Gulf Coast states. It progresses northward with cucurbit production each spring. Yield loss associated with downy mildew is most likely related to soft rots that occur after plant canopies collapse and sunburn occurs on fruit. Didymella bryoniae, syn. Mycosphaerella melonis, is an ascomycete fungal plant pathogen that causes gummy stem blight on the family Cucurbitaceae, which includes cantaloupe, cucumber, muskmelon and watermelon plants. The anamorph/asexual stage for this fungus is called Phoma cucurbitacearum. When this pathogen infects the fruit of cucurbits it is called black rot.

Colletotrichum orbiculare is a plant pathogen of melons and cucumber. It causes the disease anthracnose that can effect curcubits causing lesions on various parts of the plant. It can effect cucumbers, melon, squash, watermelon and pumpkin, especially when the weather is rainy, humid and warm. It can be transmitted by seed as well as soil and survive between crops. It is also spread by feeding cucumber beetles, splashing water, tools and workers. Efforts to control the fungus include the practice of rotating cucurbits out for a 2-year period, planting cultivars with resistance, burning infected crops and careful control of weeds. Chemical control measures are also available.

<i>Pseudoperonospora cubensis</i> Species of single-celled organism

Pseudoperonospora cubensis is a species of water mould known for causing downy mildew on cucurbits such as cantaloupe, cucumber, pumpkin, squash and watermelon. This water mould is an important pathogen of all these crops, especially in areas with high humidity and rainfall, such as the eastern United States. In most years the disease is an annual, late-season problem on squash and pumpkin in the eastern and central United States, however, since 2004 it has become one of the most important diseases in cucumber production. Considered a highly destructive foliar disease of cucurbits, successful breeding in the mid-twentieth century provided adequate control of downy mildew in cucumber without the use of fungicides. The resurgence in virulence has caused growers great concern and substantial economic losses, while downy mildew in other cucurbit crops continues to be a yearly hindrance.

<i>Cucumis melo</i> Species of plant

Cucumis melo, also known as melon, is a species of Cucumis that has been developed into many cultivated varieties. The fruit is a pepo. The flesh is either sweet or bland, with or without a musky aroma, and the rind can be smooth, ribbed, wrinkled, or netted. In North America, the sweet-flesh varieties are often collectively called muskmelon, including the musky netted-rind varieties and the inodorous smooth-rind varieties, and cantaloupe usually means the former type. Gummy stem blight is a cucurbit-rot disease caused by the fungal plant pathogen Didymella bryoniae. Gummy stem blight can affect a host at any stage of growth in its development and affects all parts of the host including leaves, stems and fruits. Symptoms generally consist of circular dark tan lesions that blight the leaf, water soaked leaves, stem cankers, and gummy brown ooze that exudes from cankers, giving it the name gummy stem blight. Gummy stem blight reduces yields of edible cucurbits by devastating the vines and leaves and rotting the fruits. There are various methods to control gummy stem blight, including use of treated seed, crop rotation, using preventative fungicides, eradication of diseased material, and deep plowing previous debris.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Oriental melon</span> Melon cultivar

The oriental melon, is a group of Cucumis melo cultivars that are produced in East Asia. Phylogenetic studies tracing the genetic lineage of the plant suggest that it may have originated in eastern India, having then spread to China over the Silk Road, from which it was introduced to Korea and Japan. Its flavour has been described as a cross between a honeydew melon and a cucumber. It is noticeably less sweet than Western varieties of melon, and consists of about 90% water. The fruits are commonly eaten fresh; with its thin rind and small seeds, the melon can be eaten whole.

<i>Melon necrotic spot virus</i> Species of virus

Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV) is a virus that belongs to the genus Gammacarmovirus of the family Tombusviridae. It has been observed in several countries of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. It is considered to be an endemic virus in greenhouses and field productions of Cucurbitaceae crops, including melon, cucumber, and watermelon. MNSV is mainly spread through infected soil, seedlings, insects, and by the root-inhabiting fungus vector Olpidium bornovanus. Symptoms vary between Curbitaceae crops, but generally consist of chlorosis, brown necrotic lesions, leaf wilt, fruit decay, and plant death. Management of the disease consists of preventing infection by rotating fields and crops, steam sterilization, and disposal of infected plants. Also, treated seeds with heat or chemicals are efficient in preventing infection. MNSV is important in melon plants as it causes vast economical damage worldwide reducing significant yields.

Gherkin is a common name for a pickled cucumber, especially in British English.
