Mizoram Institute of Medical Education & Research is the first medical college in Mizoram, India. It was inaugurated on 7 August 2018 by the Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalthanhawla at Falkawn, about 16 km from Aizawl,Mizoram. [1] [2] MIMER is expected to meet the growing demand of Doctors in Mizoram. [3]

Mizoram State in North-east India

Mizoram is a state in northeastern India, with Aizawl as its capital city. The name is derived from "Mizo", the name of the native inhabitants, and "Ram", which means land, and thus Mizoram means "land of the Mizos". Within the northeast region, it is the southernmost landlocked state, sharing borders with three of the Seven Sister States, namely Tripura, Assam and Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometre border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Aizawl Capital in Mizoram, India

Aizawl is the capital of the state of Mizoram in India. With a population of 293,416, it is the largest city in the state. It is also the centre of administration containing all the important government offices, state assembly house and civil secretariat. The population of Aizawl strongly reflects the different communities of the ethnic Mizo people. Aizawl hosted the third edition of Xchange North East Youth NGO summit from October 3rd to 5th, 2018.

Construction work on the State Referral Hospital started in 1999 with funds from the Planning Commission, following approval of Rs. 40 crore for the proposal in 1996. The State Referral Hospital was initially planned for a 300 Bed Hospital but had to start as a 50 bedded hospital in the Administrative Building from 21 July 2005 because the then Mizo National Front government deviated from original plan in executing construction. [4] Subsequently, it was enlarged to 150 beds on 10 Dec 2012. MIMER was established by the Government of Mizoram under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals' with a project cost of Rs. 189 lakhs and funding pattern 90:10. [5] Permission to start MBBS courses was given on 25 May 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on the recommendation of the Medical Council of India. [6] It was inaugurated on the 7th August, 2018 by Lalthanhawla, the Chief Minister of Mizoram.

The Planning Commission was an institution in the Government of India, which formulated India's Five-Year Plans, among other functions.

Mizo National Front political party

The Mizo National Front is a regional political party in Mizoram, India. MNF emerged from the Mizo National Famine Front, which was formed by Pu Laldenga to protest against the inaction of the Indian central government towards the famine situation in the Mizo areas of the Assam state in 1959. It staged a major uprising in 1966, followed by years of underground activities. In 1986, it signed the Mizoram Accord with the Government of India, renouncing secession and violence.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is an Indian government ministry charged with health policy in India. It is also responsible for all government programs relating to family planning in India.

Admissions

Students are admitted through National Eligibility and Entrance Test. Total number of students admitted per year is 100, with 15% of seats reserved for All India Quota, 15% seats for NRI Quota and 70% of seats reserved for the State Quota. [7]

The college is offering MBBS course which is affiliated to Mizoram University and Medical Council of India. [8]

Mizoram University

Mizoram University is a central university under the University Grants Commission, Government of India, and was established on 2 July 2001, by the Mizoram University Act (2000) of the Parliament of India. The President of India is the official Visitor, and the Governor of Mizoram acts as the Chief Rector as per Mizoram University (Amendment) Bill, 2007. According to the Act, the objectives of the university are "to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit, to make provisions for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, forestry and other allied disciplines in the educational programmes of the University; to take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-disciplinary studies and research; to educate and train man-power in the development of the state of Mizoram; and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of that State, their intellectual, academic and cultural development". Keeping these objectives in view, Mizoram University has embarked on various programmes for academic and administrative development.

Medical Council of India organization

The Medical Council of India (MCI) Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, the Medical Council of India shall stand superseded now is not a statutory body for establishing uniform and high standards of medical education in India. The Council grants recognition of medical qualifications, gives accreditation to medical schools, grants registration to medical practitioners, and monitors medical practice in India. The current President of MCI is Dr. Jayshreeben Mehta.

The Medical College is located on a campus at Falkawn on the outskirts of Aizawl, about 16 km from Aizawl city and takes about 41 minutes to drive. [10]

Lal Thanhawla Indian politician

Lal Thanhawla is an Indian politician and former Chief Minister of Mizoram from 11 December 2008 to 11 December 2018. Previously he was Chief Minister from 1984 to 1986 and from 1989 to 1998. He was elected to another term in the 2013 Mizoram Legislative Assembly election. This was the fifth time he was elected to the office of Chief Minister, which is a record in Mizoram. He belongs to the Indian National Congress. His electoral constituencies are Serchhip and Hrangturzo. He successfully contested the general elections nine times, in 1978, 1979, 1984, 1987, 1993, 2003, 2008, and 2013.

It is the second hospital established, and the largest non-governmental hospital in Mizoram. It has a registered capacity of 300 beds.

Helen Lowry College of Arts & Commerce

Helen Lowry College of Arts & Commerce, Aizawl, is a College run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Aizawl in the Mizoram State of India. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school and College system. It was inaugurated as college on 23rd August 2017 by the Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalthanhawla.

St. Xavier's College, Lengpui, Mizoram, India, is an undergraduate college opened in 2017. It is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Navarre Jesuit of the 16th century, who ministered in India. It is the first catholic college in Mizoram, India.
