Navamani Elia Peter (born 6 April 1933) [8] is a Deaconess, espousing women's leadership in the Church, focusing on Ordination of women in Christianity. She was in the forefront of the movement for gender equality since the Eighties. Navamani held key positions of leadership globally. [9] She was at the helm of leadership in multifaced Church-based organisations, notably the National Council of Churches in India, [1] World Methodist Council, [8] World Day of Prayer International Committee [10] and Christian Conference of Asia. [8]

In 2007 she was elected as President of The India Bible Society Trust Association, a first woman to be hold the position since the inception of the trust in 1811. She held the position in Bangalore from 2007 [11] through 2013. Navamani has been member of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India and held the elected post of President for two bienniums. [12]

Since 2020, [13] she spends her time writing motivational articles for the young generation [14] to lead meaningful and better lives through the The Upper Room . [15]

Early life and education

Navamani was born in the port town of Machilipatnam in Northern Circars (Madras Presidency) in Colonial India. [8] She did her schooling from Lady Ampthill Government School, Machilipatnam. For Undergraduate education, she studied at The Hindu College, taking a B.Sc. degree, also in Machilipatnam. She also did her specialization in education from JMJ-St. Joseph's College of Education for Women in Guntur leading to B.Ed.. [8]

During the 1980s, she enrolled at United Theological College, Bangalore for spiritual studies leading to B.D.. [3] It was here that she was exposed to learned faculty comprising [3] Joshua Russell Chandran, CSI, E. C. John, CSI, G. D. Melanchthon, AELC, Theodore N. Swanson, ELCA. The Cultural diversity at the campus enriched her learning experience. The presence of Carmelite Church Fathers among the college faculty, also provided her with an ecumenical exposure. [16] After completion of her studies, The Senate of Serampore College (University), led by Registrar D. S. Satyaranjan, IPC, [3] awarded her a B. D. degree.

Career

Navamani began her career as a Teacher in MCI–Stanley Girls High School, Hyderabad, beginning in the 1950s. Since the 1980s, her leadership in the Church made her take up greater assignments both nationally and globally.

Navamani participated in a number of local [17] and international institutional leadership and management meetings, notably the Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians sponsored national consultation on women's perspectives held in India in 1984, [18] the World Council of Churches Assembly held in Australia in 1991 [19] and the World Methodist Conference held in Brazil in 1996. [20] She was also at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities) at its forty-ninth session held in Switzerland in 1997. [21]

During the course of participation in international institutional meetings, Navamani had been elected to the leadership of many global organisations worldwide.

Writings

The writings of Navamani have been acknowledged by both Theologians and other Scholars. Paul Arasu Selvanathan as a 2017 doctoral student at the Comillas Pontifical University in Spain defines an Indian Family [24] on the basis of Navamani's [6] article. Pushpa Samuel of Fuller Theological Seminary, United States espouses for ordination of women in the Mar Thoma Syrian Church through a 2020 article, citing the work of Navamani. [25] Praisy David, a 2020 student of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar [14] takes a cue from Navamani on espousing Gender equality, she quotes,

As Navamani E. Peter, in the introduction of the book Jesus Talks to Women writes that, [14] Jesus saw women as intelligent, thinking humans, equal with men. His attitude with women was remarkable in a day when men thought women were a lower grade than themselves.

In theological matters, Sirirat Pusurinkham of the Presbyterian Church of Thailand was critical of Navamani's observation of a love story in the episode of Levite's concubine. [26] Navamani's writings appeared in the public domain since the 1980s. She continues to write articles through The Upper Room.

Honours

In 2000, in recognition of women's leadership, the nation's first [27] University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) conferred upon Navamani an honorary Doctor of Divinity. [2]

Lynn Alton de Silva was a Sri Lankan theologian and Methodist minister. He was the founder and editor of one of the first theological journals on Buddhist-Christian encounter called Dialogue (1961–1981), chief translator for the revision of the Old Testament of the Sinhalese Bible published as New Sinhala Bible (1973–1982), and director of the Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue (EISD) in Sri Lanka (1962–1982). Lynn de Silva is widely regarded as one of the foremost Christian practitioners of Buddhist-Christian dialogue in Sri Lanka, and also as one of the pioneers in this dialogue.

Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar is a feminist activist ecumenical theologian who taught at Serampore College, Serampore (1990-1994) the United Theological College, Bangalore, (1999-2014). Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar was the first permanent woman faculty to serve as faculty in the Theology Department of the renowned Serampore College, founded by William Carey when he came to India in 1792. She was the first Lutheran Woman to serve as first Vice President of the United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India in 2006. She comes from a family of theologians - about 17 of them, her father, all eight siblings, and seven of the eight who married into the family. Evangeline Anderson-Rajkumar served as the President of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India (ATTWI) and is a sought after resource person on Body Theology.

Jetti Alfred Oliver is the present chancellor of Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences (SHUATS), Allahabad , which is a Govt. Aided Private (Minority) University under section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. He is an agriculturalist, with his past experience in the development sector, continues to be in the forefront of the leadership of like-minded initiatives and is an elected member of the 10-member international governing council of the Society for International Development (SID).

Acharya A. B. Masilamani or Abel Boanerges Masilamani (1914–1990) was a Golden Jubilee Baptist pastor and evangelist on whom parallels had been drawn comparing his ecclesiastical ministry with that of Saint Paul. The Mar Thoma Syrian Church, one of the Saint Thomas Christian Churches founded by Thomas the Apostle in the first century which holds the annual Maramon Conventions used to have Masilamani preach at its conventions since the 1970s. During one such Maramon Convention held in 1983 at Maramon, Masilamani was one of the main speaker who spoke on Christology in the presence of the two patriarchs of the Mar Thoma Church, Alexander Mar Thoma and Thomas Mar Athanius.

Rajula Annie Watson is a Theologian who presently teaches at the Karnataka Theological College, Mangalore, a Seminary established in 1965 and affiliated to the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College. Annie has been a member of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India since 1991 as well as Associate Presbyter at CSI-Hebich Memorial Church, Mangalore.

Modayil Mani Chacko is an Old Testament Scholar and a Management Consultant. In a career spanning over four decades from the Eighties, his roles included ministering, teaching, directing and managing largescale human resources in educational, goodwill-promoting and literary organisations with a pan-Indian presence.

Roger Gaikwad(born February 13, 1953) was General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in India and has been in office from 2010 through 2019.

S. E. Krupa Rao was a Baptist Pastor of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars where he held leadership positions in the Church society whose area of operation extended from Srikakulam District in the northern circars along the Bay of Bengal right through seven districts up to Guntur District.

Chrysostom Arangaden (1916—2004) was an Old Testament scholar and a member of the Society for Biblical Studies, India. Arangaden was notable for his contribution as Associate General Secretary (Translation's) of the Bible Society of India.

G. Solomon was an Old Testament Scholar and a Baptist Patriarch hailing from the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society (an affiliate member of the Baptist World Alliance and the National Council of Churches in India) and led it as its President during the years 1978-1982 overseeing the spiritual affairs of the Church Society whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprises the three states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 873 Churches comprising nearly a million members per present statistics.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

Graham Basanti a.k.a. M. G. Basanti is a silver jubilee woman priest and the first ordinand from the Protestant Jeypore Evangelical Lutheran Church Society (JELC), headquartered in Jeypore, Odisha, India. She was in the forefront of JELC leadership, representing it at United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Basanti has been a founding member of the Association of Theologically Trained Women of India (ATTWI), and was also elected to its executive committee for the bienniums 1979–1981 and 2002–2006. Basanti has also been associated with the National Council of Churches in India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">G. D. Melanchthon</span> Indian theologian

G. D. Melanchthon (1934–1994) was a Silver Jubilee Priest hailing from Protestant Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Society who taught Religions, at United Theological College, Bangalore from 1968 till the latter half of eighties until his career was brought to an abrupt end in 1988 on being stricken with paralysis. Melanchthon used to be quite active among the academic community along with Chrysostom Arangaden, Arvind P. Nirmal and others in not only delivering scholarly talks, but also in contributing research articles and reviewing new titles.

Nalla Thomas was an Asian Christian and a spiritual personality, who served the Church in Assam and undivided Andhra Pradesh for nearly four decades comprising the seventies through the New millennium. He used to compose hymns for enhancing spiritual direction. Thomas was an Ecclesiastical administrator of Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society.
