Nicholas David Champion (born 27 February 1972) is an Australian politician. He is a member of the South Australian Labor Party and has served in the South Australian House of Assembly since the 2022 South Australian state election, representing the seat of Taylor. He has served as the Minister for Trade and Investment,Minister for Housing and Urban Development and Minister for Planning in the Malinauskas ministry since March 2022.
Champion previously served in federal parliament as a Labor Party member in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2022,first representing the Division of Wakefield until its abolition in 2019,before transferring to the new Division of Spence.
Champion was born in Elizabeth in South Australia. He spent his early years in the rural town of Kapunda and completed his secondary education at Kapunda High School while working part-time as a fruit picker. He also previously worked as a cleaner, salesman and trolley collector. He completed an Arts degree and a Graduate Diploma in Communication at the University of South Australia. [2]
Champion became a union official at the Shop,Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) in 1994,serving as an organiser, training officer and occupational health and safety officer. [2] He is aligned with the Labor Right. [3]
Champion served as South Australian State President of the Australian Labor Party from 2005 to 2006 and was a ministerial adviser to state Labor Minister Michael Wright. [1]
Champion won the seat of Wakefield at the 2007 election, defeating incumbent Liberal Party of Australia member David Fawcett with a 56.6 percent two-party vote. [4] He was the third Labor member to ever win the seat. Champion made it a safe Labor seat on paper at the 2010 election with a 62 percent two-party vote, and became the first Labor member to be re-elected to Wakefield. The South Australian federal redistribution in 2011 had the greatest impact on Wakefield where the Labor margin declined by 1.5 points. Champion retained Wakefield at the 2013 election on a 53.4 percent two-party vote even as Labor lost government, marking the first time the non-Labor parties won government at an election without winning Wakefield. Champion increased his margin at the 2016 election with a 61 percent two-party vote, again making Wakefield a safe Labor seat on paper.
Champion served as a shadow parliamentary secretary (shadow assistant minister from 2016) in Bill Shorten's shadow ministry from 2014 to 2019. [1]
In August 2019,he called for the nationalisation of Port Darwin following its lease to a Chinese-owned company. [5]
In 2020,Champion was rumoured to be considering a switch to state parliament, initially through the electoral district of Light in the South Australian House of Assembly, following the release of draft new boundaries that would have left the seat vacant. [6] That plan was thwarted by the final report of the Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission, however Champion was again the topic of speculation in January 2021,this time for the safe Taylor. [7] Both state electorates are covered by Champion's larger federal division of Spence.
On 13 February 2021,Champion was pre-selected for the House of Assembly seat of Taylor for the 2022 South Australian election. [8] On 22 February 2022,he resigned his federal seat of Spence to contest the state election a month later. [1] A by-election in his seat of Spence was not held due to the pending federal election. [9] Taylor was a comfortably safe Labor seat, and Champion easily retained the seat. He was immediately promoted to Cabinet, serving as the Minister for Trade and Investment,Minister for Housing and Urban Development and Minister for Planning in the Malinauskas ministry. [10]
Champion is married to Fiona Webber,a former ABC journalist and Chief of Staff to a Federal Labor Minister. [11] [12] They were married in Gibraltar after he proposed in the week of the 2013 election. [13] Their first child was born just over a month after the 2016 election. [14] Nick Champion lives outside of the electoral district of Taylor. He is a resident of North Adelaide.
David Julian Fawcett is an Australian Liberal Party politician who has been a Senator for South Australia since 2011. Fawcett served in the Morrison Government as Assistant Minister for Defence from 2018 to 2019.
The Division of Barker is an Australian Electoral Division in the south-east of South Australia. The division was established on 2 October 1903,when South Australia's original single multi-member division was split into seven single-member divisions. It is named for Collet Barker,an early explorer of the region at the mouth of the Murray River. The 63,886 km²seat currently stretches from Morgan in the north to Port MacDonnell in the south, taking in the Murray Mallee, the Riverland, the Murraylands and most of the Barossa Valley, and includes the towns of Barmera,Berri,Bordertown,Coonawarra,Keith,Kingston SE,Loxton,Lucindale,Mannum,Millicent,Mount Gambier,Murray Bridge,Naracoorte,Penola,Renmark,Robe,Tailem Bend,Waikerie, and parts of Nuriootpa and Tanunda.
The Division of Hindmarsh is an Australian Electoral Division in South Australia covering the western suburbs of Adelaide. The division was one of the seven established when the former Division of South Australia was split on 2 October 1903,and was first contested at the 1903 election, though on vastly different boundaries. The Division is named after Sir John Hindmarsh, who was Governor of South Australia from 1836 to 1838. The 78 km²seat extends from the coast in the west to South Road in the east, covering the suburbs of Ascot Park,Brooklyn Park,Edwardstown,Fulham,Glenelg,Grange,Henley Beach,Kidman Park,Kurralta Park,Morphettville,Plympton,Richmond,Semaphore Park,Torrensville,West Beach and West Lakes. The Adelaide International Airport is centrally located in the electorate, making noise pollution a prominent local issue, besides the aged care needs of the relatively elderly population −the seat has one of Australia's highest proportions of citizens over the age of 65. Progressive boundary redistributions over many decades transformed Hindmarsh from a safe Labor seat in to a marginal seat often won by the government of the day.
The Division of Port Adelaide was an Australian electoral division in the state of South Australia. The 181 km²seat extended from St Kilda in the north to Grange Road and Findon in the south with part of Salisbury to the east. Suburbs included Alberton,Beverley,Birkenhead,Cheltenham,Findon,Kilkenny,Largs Bay,Mansfield Park,North Haven,Ottoway,Parafield Gardens,Paralowie,Pennington,Port Adelaide,Queenstown,Rosewater,Salisbury Downs,Semaphore,Woodville,West Croydon, and part of Seaton. The seat also included Torrens Island and Garden Island. Port Adelaide was abolished in 2019,after a redistribution triggered by a change in representation entitlement which saw South Australia's seats in the House of Representatives reduced to ten.
The Division of Wakefield was an Australian electoral division in the state of South Australia. The seat was a hybrid rural-urban electorate that stretched from Salisbury in the outer northern suburbs of Adelaide at the south of the seat right through to the Clare Valley at the north of the seat,135 km from Adelaide. It included the suburbs of Elizabeth,Craigmore,Munno Para, and part of Salisbury, and the towns of Balaklava,Clare,Freeling,Gawler,Kapunda,Mallala,Riverton,Tarlee,Virginia,Williamstown, and part of Port Wakefield.

He was previously a minister in the Weatherill cabinet.
The 2018 South Australian state election to elect members to the 54th Parliament of South Australia was held on 17 March 2018. All 47 seats in the House of Assembly or lower house, whose members were elected at the 2014 election, and 11 of 22 seats in the Legislative Council or upper house, last filled at the 2010 election, were contested. The record-16-year-incumbent Australian Labor Party (SA) government led by Premier Jay Weatherill was seeking a fifth four-year term, but was defeated by the opposition Liberal Party of Australia (SA),led by Opposition Leader Steven Marshall. Nick Xenophon's new SA Best party unsuccessfully sought to obtain the balance of power.

It is one of two major parties in the bicameral Parliament of South Australia, the other being the Australian Labor Party. The party has been led by Leader of the Opposition David Speirs since the 2022 state election after a one-term government.
The 2022 South Australian state election was held on 19 March 2022 to elect members to the 55th Parliament of South Australia. All 47 seats in the House of Assembly, and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for re-election.
The 2022 Australian federal election was held on 21 May 2022 to elect members of the 47th Parliament of Australia. The incumbent Liberal/National coalition government led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison sought to win a fourth consecutive term in office. It was challenged by the opposition, the Labor Party led by Anthony Albanese. The Greens,United Australia,One Nation, other minor parties, and independents also contested the election.
