Orsillus depressus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae. [1] It is a terrestrial insect native to southern Europe. [1] It is considered a naturalized introduced species in the UK. O. depressus was first recorded in England in the 1980s and is now common throughout central and southern England. [2] [3] In southern Europe, its host plants are trees in Cupressaceae while in the UK Lawson's Cypress is the most common host plant. [2] O. depressus is approximately 6 mm in length and has a browny-orange coloration. [4] Like many other species in Lygaeidae, O. depressus is a phytophagous species, feeding on plants, and it is commonly found in woodland/forest habitats and in cultivated areas of gardens and parks. [5]
The Lygaeidae are a family in the Hemiptera, with more than 110 genera in four subfamilies. The family is commonly referred to as seed bugs, and less commonly, milkweed bugs, or ground bugs. However, while many of the species feed on seeds, some feed on sap (mucivory) or seed pods, others are omnivores and a few, such as the wekiu bug, are carnivores that feed exclusively on insects. Insects in this family are distributed across the world, including throughout North America. The family was vastly larger, but numerous former subfamilies have been removed and given independent family status, including the Artheneidae, Blissidae, Cryptorhamphidae, Cymidae, Geocoridae, Heterogastridae, Ninidae, Oxycarenidae and Rhyparochromidae, which together constituted well over half of the former family.
Tropidothorax is a genus of seed bugs or ground bugs belonging to the family Lygaeidae, subfamily Lygaeinae. There are about 11 described species in Tropidothorax.
The Blissidae are a family in the Hemiptera, comprising nearly 50 genera and 400 species. The group has often been treated as a subfamily of the Lygaeidae but was resurrected as a full family by Thomas Henry (1997).
Graptostethus is a genus in the insect family Lygaeidae. Although originally restricted to the Old World some species like G. servus have spread to parts of the New World.
Caenocoris nerii, common name oleander seedbug, is a species of ground bugs in the insect family Lygaeidae.
Neortholomus is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about nine described species in Neortholomus.
Orsillinae is a subfamily of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are at least 110 described species in Orsillinae; the type genus is Orsillus.
Lygaeospilus tripunctatus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae. It is found in Central America and North America.
Lygaeospilus is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are at least four described species in Lygaeospilus.
Oncopeltus is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae, which has at least 40 described species in Oncopeltus.
Xyonysius is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about eight described species in Xyonysius.
Melacoryphus is a genus of seed bugs in the family Lygaeidae. There are about 11 described species in Melacoryphus, found in Central and North America.
Lygaeus analis is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae, found in Mexico, Central America, and tropical South America.
Oncopeltus famelicus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae, found in sub-Saharan Africa.
Haemobaphus concinnus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae, found in southern Africa.
Orsillus is a genus of Palaearctic bugs, in the family Lygaeidae; it is the type genus of the subfamily Orsillinae and tribe Orsillini. Species are recorded from Europe and includes O. depressus which has become naturalised in the British Isles.
Oncopeltus guttaloides is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae. It is found in the southern Central America and the southern United States. Like other species of Oncopeltus, their nymphs are gregarious and can be found in large clusters on host plants.
Crompus opacus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae. It is a terrestrial insect found only in Australia. Crompus opacus is not currently listed under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1976 in the Northern Territory of Australia.
Oncopeltus zonatus is a species of seed bug in the family Lygaeidae, found in the Neotropics in Guiana, Peru, and Chile. Oncopeltus zonatus is a terrestrial species, and its known host plants are Asclepias curassavica, Funastrum clausum, and Nerium oleander.
