It is bordered on the north and east by the state of New York; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; on the southwest by Delaware Bay and the state of Delaware. At 7,354 square miles (19,050 km2), New Jersey is the fifth-smallest state based on land area, but with close to 9.3 million residents, is the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated. New Jersey's state capital is Trenton, while the state's most populous city is Newark. With the sole exception of Warren County, all counties in the state lie within the combined statistical areas of New York City or Philadelphia; consequently, the state's largest metropolitan area falls within Greater New York.

Located in the northeastern corner of New Jersey and its Gateway Region, Bergen County is part of the New York City metropolitan area and is directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan, to which it is connected by the George Washington Bridge.
Jersey City is the second-most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey, after Newark. It is the county seat of Hudson County as well as the county's largest city. The 2020 United States census showed that the city's population was 292,449, ranking as the 71st-most-populous incorporated place in the nation. The 2020 census represents an increase of 18.1% from the 2010 United States Census, when the city's population stood at 247,597. Jersey City, with a population density of 17,396 inhabitants per square mile (6,717/km2) as of 2013, had the third-highest density of any U.S. city with over 100,000 people, behind only New York City and San Francisco (17,859).
Highlands is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 5,005, a decline of 92 (-1.8%) from the 2000 Census, which had seen an increase of 248 (+5.1%) from the 1990 Census. The eastern part of the town is on a high bluff that overlooks Sandy Hook and the Atlantic Ocean, from which the borough derives its name. Atop this bluff are the Navesink Twin Lights.

It is a tributary of the Androscoggin River, which flows to the Kennebec River at Merrymeeting Bay in Maine, near the Atlantic Ocean. The total length of the river is 30 miles (48 km), or 48 miles (77 km) if the distances across intervening lakes are included.
