Patearoa is a small settlement in inland Otago in New Zealand's South Island. It is located 20 kilometres southwest of Ranfurly, in the Maniototo (the upper valley of the Taieri River) and was originally known as Sowburn. Andrew Buchanan was an early runholder in Patearoa. [1]

The Taieri River is the fourth-longest river in New Zealand and is in Otago in the South Island. Rising in the Lammerlaw Range, it initially flows north, then east around the Rock and Pillar range before turning southeast, reaching the sea 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Dunedin.

The Manuherikia River is located in Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. It rises in the far north of the Maniototo, with the West Branch draining the eastern side of the St Bathans Range, and the East Branch draining the western flanks of the Hawkdun Range. The river continues southwest through the wide Manuherikia Valley to its confluence with the Clutha River at Alexandra. During the 1860s the Manuherikia was one of the centres of the Central Otago Gold Rush.
The Rock and Pillar Range of high hills is located in the Maniototo, an area of inland Otago, New Zealand. They are surrounded by the Taieri River, which has its source in the range, flowing out across the scroll plain at Paerau, before almost doubling back on itself at Waipiata and flowing back along the other side through the Strath-Taieri. The town of Middlemarch lies close to the Taieri to the east of the range, and Patearoa lies to the northwest.
Allanton is a small town in Otago, New Zealand, located some 20 kilometres southwest of Dunedin on State Highway 1. The settlement lies at the eastern edge of the Taieri Plains close to the Taieri River at the junction of the main road to Dunedin International Airport at Momona.
Quartermain Point is a prominent point in the north part of Moubray Bay between Helm Point and Cape Roget. It was named by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1957–58, for L.B. Quartermain, president, New Zealand Antarctic Society, who took a close interest in the work of the expedition.

It is situated between Saint Leonards and Port Chalmers on a rocky promontory of the same name which juts 0.6 kilometres (0.37 mi) into the harbour between Sawyers Bay and Blanket Bay. The suburb and promontory are likely to have been named from the similar location of Rosneath in Scotland.

It was named by the Southern Party of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (1961–62) for Captain Ashley C. McKinley, a photographer with Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his South Pole flight of 1929.
Roaring Valley is a moraine-filled valley on the north side of Mount Dromedary, formerly occupied by the coalescing glaciers that descend northeast and north from Mount Kempe and Mount Dromedary. The New Zealand Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition (VUWAE), 1960-61 named this feature after they experienced strong winds at most campsites in the area—but none as violent and destructive force as the winds that struck their camp at the valley mouth.
