Bishop P. I. Vara Prasad(born 8.10.1962) [1] is a silver jubilee Priest [2] and current Bishop - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India. Ever since his ordination as Deacon/Presbyter in 1993 by then Bishop L. V. Azariah, he began his career as a Priest in Churches within ecclesiastical jurisdiction of CSI-Diocese of Rayalaseema that comprise parts of civil states of Andhra Pradesh and Telugu-speaking parts of Tamil Nadu. Vara Prasad is well versed in conducting Mass, following Presbyterian, Congregational and Anglican rites.

Ministerial formation

Vara Prasad undertook spiritual studies as a fully-resident seminarian at Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad, affiliated to nation's first [3] University, the Senate of Serampore College (University), where he studied Bachelor of Theology during the academic years 1989–1992. [1] He studied at the seminary at a time when cycle of principalship was rolling over from Suppogu Joseph, STBC to M. Victor Paul, AELC, both of whom were New Testament Scholars. Co-faculty comprised Systematic Theologians, Regunta Yesurathnam, CSI, B. J. Christie Kumar, STBC, G. Dyvasirvadam, CSI, as well as P. Joseph, STBC and G. T. Abraham, CSI, who taught Christian Ministry.

With availability of international Scholars from Germany, Canada and United States, Vara Prasad was exposed to faculty, that composed of alumni from Universities of Hamburg, Montreal and Yale, Klaus Schäfer, EMS, Raymond Waldock, CBM and Tracy Greer Gipson, ABM. Communicative English and library accession system were enhanced with presence of LaVerne Louise-Waldock [4] and Marjorie May Lynch-Gipson. [5]

Much like any University Grants Commission-recognised institution, Vara Prasad learnt the nuances of academic learning in a semester system. He also learnt Biblical Greek and Biblical Hebrew from perhaps the best available Scholars [6] in India in Serampore University system. During his three-year ministerial formation at Protestant Regional Theologiate in Secunderabad, Vara Prasad also came under the tutelage of Old Testament Scholar, G. Babu Rao, CBCNC,. [7] Prasad was awarded a graduate degree during 1993 convocation of Senate of Serampore College (University), then under Registrarship of New Testament Scholar, D. S. Satyaranjan, IPC, held at Serampore College, Serampore.

Career

Parish work

Vara Prasad's began serving in parishes under the Diocese after his ordination in 1993, [2] that comprised Churches established by Reformed Church in America, London Missionary Society and Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. He was in Kamalapuram, Yerraguntla, Kadapa, Adoni, Anantapur, Guntakal, Pulivendula, among other parishes. [2] [8] Vara Prasad went about his priestly duties as Pastor in ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Rayalaseema under the care of able Servants, comprising L. V. Azariah, C. B. M. Frederick, K. B. Yesu Vara Prasad and B. D. Prasada Rao.

Vara Prasad was involved in both spiritual and healing ministries [9] of the Church. Gradually, he began exhibiting leadership skills for the larger cause of the Church, which included conducting retreats [10] [11] and also representing the Diocese at Church of South India Synod. [12]

Bishopric

Issac Vara Prasad had nearly 30 years [2] of parish service and was a senior Priest in his diocese. He stood in fray for bishopric of the Diocese and was elected to the panel constituted by the CSI Synod. He was declared elected as Bishop by CSI Synod and was consecrated on 22 February 2021 at CSI Central Church, Kadapa [2] by Moderator, Dharmaraj Rasalam (Principal Consecrator) and Deputy Moderator K. Reuben Mark (Co-consecrator), which was witnessed by a host of Bishops from adjoining dioceses. [2]

Vara Prasad's parish ministry in Pulivendula brought him in contact with then Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, whose family were members of CSI Church there. After coming to know about conversion experience of ancestors of YSR and their faith journey, he encouraged [2] their family members to compile an autobiography, which could serve as a sourcebook of inspiration for others. [13] Vara Prasad's interest in motivating his parishioners to document could perhaps be attributed to influence of his Spiritual Formators in Church History/History of Christianity comprising B. C. Paul, AELC, C. Yesupadam, AELC, D. J. Jeremiah, CBCNC, and K. L. Richardson, AELC, who taught at varying intervals back in his seminary days.

The Bishopric of Prakasa Rao lasted for two decades from 1981 through 2001, one of the longest in the history of the Church of South India Society. Prakasa Rao led the bishopric of Krishna-Godavari that comprised the Christian missions established by the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) which merged its South India Christian missions in India into the Church of South India Society which was inaugurated in 1947 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Madras.

Ryder Devapriam was systematic theologian who taught during the 1960s and the 1970s at the Andhra Christian Theological College, a Protestant Regional Theologiate in Secunderabad, affiliated to the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956}with degree-granting authority validated by a Danish Charter and ratified by the Government of West Bengal.

G. T. Abraham was Bishop - in - Diocese of Nandyal of the Church of South India. He also taught Christian Ministry at the Andhra Christian Theological College. Hyderabad

The Right Reverend K. Reuben Mark is the present Bishop in Karimnagar and the sixth in succession and occupies the Cathedra of the Bishop placed in Karimnagar's CSI-Wesley Cathedral. Reuben Mark is currently a Council Member for the period 2015–2018 at the fully-ecumenical United Theological College, Bangalore. During the XXXVIth session of Church of South India Synod, Reuben Mark has been elected as Deputy Moderator for the triennium 2020-2023 succeeding V. Prasada Rao.

V. Prasada Rao was the eighth Bishop - in - Dornakal Diocese of the Church of South India who was principally consecrated on 12 June 2012 by then Moderator, G. Devakadasham and co-consecrated by then Deputy Moderator, G. Dyvasirvadam of the Church of South India Synod at the CSI-Epiphany Cathedral, Dornakal. During the Synod of 2017, Prasada Rao also served as the Deputy Moderator of the Synod for the triennium 2017–2019.

Bishop B. D. Prasada Rao(born 13.8.1952) is Bishop Emeritus - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India and past ex officio member of the Church of South India Synod for the period 2013-2019. He retired on attaining superannuation on 13 August 2019.

The Right Reverend K. B. Yesu Prasad is Bishop Emeritus - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India who served as bishop from 2006 through 2012.

On 12 October 2016, the Church of South India Synod headquartered in Chennai, appointed Solomon Raj to assume the ecclesiastical Office of the Bishopric of Medak and was consecrated the next day on 13 October 2016 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Chennai, ending four years of sede vacante in the Diocese of Medak which was without a bishop during the intervening period of 2012–2016.

G. Solomon was an Old Testament Scholar and a Baptist Patriarch hailing from the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society (an affiliate member of the Baptist World Alliance and the National Council of Churches in India) and led it as its President during the years 1978-1982 overseeing the spiritual affairs of the Church Society whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprises the three states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 873 Churches comprising nearly a million members per present statistics.

Tantepudi George Cornelious is the current Bishop - in - Krishna Godavari Diocese of the Church of South India with the Bishop's Cathedra housed in CSI-St. Andrew's Cathedral in Machilipatnam. However, for administrative purposes, the Office of the Bishopric is located in Vijayawada with its ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompassing the civil districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

Nalla Thomas was an Asian Christian and a spiritual personality, who served the Church in Assam and undivided Andhra Pradesh for nearly four decades comprising the seventies through the New millennium. He used to compose hymns for enhancing spiritual direction. Thomas was an Ecclesiastical administrator of Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society.

Perapogu Joseph was a military chaplain in the Indian Army Corps of EME and a counselor who taught students in Serampore College, Serampore and Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad.
