Phillip Andrew Burton OAM (born 13 March 1974) is an Australian musician best known as a member of the Australian pop vocal band Human Nature with Toby Allen, Andrew Tierney and his brother Michael Tierney since 1989.

With Human Nature, he has won an ARIA Music Award for Reach Out: The Motown Record . Phil has also competed in Dancing with the Stars Australia coming in first place and winning the mirror ball trophy with his dance partner Ash-Leigh Hunter.

Biography

Phil Burton grew up in Sydney, New South Wales and studied at Hurlstone Agricultural High School where he met Toby Allen and Andrew Tierney. The three were in the same year level and worked in the school productions of Godspell and Grease . [1] They formed a band named, 4Trax, and performed for the first time in 1989 at a schools' combined concert singing "Earth Angel". [2] [3]

With Human Nature, Burton has won a Highest Selling Album ARIA Music Award for Reach Out: The Motown Record in 2006. As from 2009, the band has had 16 ARIA nominations. [4] During 2009, the band performed in Las Vegas at the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino. They returned to Australia in November and performed with Smokey Robinson at the Wyndham Estate in the Hunter Valley in December. [5]

In May 2023, it was announced that Burton would be participating in the twentieth series of Dancing with the Stars . [6] He was paired with Ash-Leigh Hunter. Announced on the 23 July, Phil and Ashley won the mirror ball trophy for their freestyle dance. Awarded 39 points out of the possible 40, the pair came equal first however won the audience vote, crowing them the winner of Dancing with the Stars Australia 2023. [7] [8]

In 2024, Burton began to regularly fill in for Larry Emdur on The Morning Show on the Seven Network. [9]

Personal life

Burton married Justine Smith, who had worked in marketing and communications for a financial company. [10] The couple lived in Belrose, New South Wales, before moving to Las Vegas in 2009. [10] As of October 2016, they have two children under the names of Ash Burton (2008) and Xavier Burton (2014). Phil Burton and his family moved back to Sydney, Australia in October 2020, and they currently reside in the North Shore area. [5] [10]

Human Frailty is the fourth studio album by Australian rock band Hunters & Collectors, which was released on 7 April 1986. It was a commercial and critical success. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart and No. 5 on the New Zealand Albums Chart. Four singles were issued from the album, "Say Goodbye", which reached No. 24 on the Kent Music Report Singles Chart; "Throw Your Arms Around Me", No. 49; "Everything's on Fire", No. 78; and "Is There Anybody in There", which did not chart in Australia but did reach No. 41 on the New Zealand Singles Chart.

Primary were an Australian electronic rock band which formed in 1995 the Fonti brothers: Jamie on keyboards and Sean on bass guitar, and Connie Mitchell on lead vocals. According to Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, the group were "Dominated by South African-born [Mitchell]'s hyperactive and full-frontal vocals, with thunderous electronic rock underpinning the music, Primary sounded like a techno Skunk Anansie. Jamie Fonti coined the phrase 'Hybrid Electronica Rock' in order to describe the band's sound." The group released two albums, This Is the Sound and Watching the World. They disbanded late in 2003.

John Howard Chester is an Australian singer-songwriter, who started his career in October 1959 with a group known as The Jaywoods, singing rock music and in 1969, changed to country music. He toured nationally with the Beatles, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and Charley Pride. During his career, he has led various groups including Johnny Chester and The Chessmen, Johnny Chester and Jigsaw, Johnny Chester and Hotspur. With Jigsaw, he had five top 30 hit singles, "Gwen (Congratulations)" (1971), "Shame and Scandal", "Midnight Bus", "World's Greatest Mum" and "She's My Kind of Woman" (1974).

You Wanna Be There But You Don't Wanna Travel is the fourth album by Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes. With Graney on vocals, the Coral Snakes line-up included his wife Clare Moore on drums and percussion; Robin Casinader on keyboards, violin and mandolin; Rob Hayward on lead guitar; and early member Gordy Blair returned on bass guitar. Robert Harold McComb is an Australian musician who played guitar, violin, organ, and other instruments with Perth-based rock group The Triffids, from 1979 to 1989. He is the older brother of the band's founder and lead singer-songwriter, David McComb (1962–1999). Both were also members of Lawson Square Infirmary and The Red Ponies.
