Picton railway station was a railway station serving the village of Picton in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe Line (which is now the North TransPennine line) it was opened on 2 June 1852 by the Leeds Northern Railway. [1] It closed to passengers on 4 January 1960 [2] and closed completely in July 1964. [3]
The station was located just north of the junction for the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Railway line to Battersby and Grosmont on the Whitby & Pickering Railway. It was 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Yarm and 10 miles (16 km) north of Northallerton. [4] Local services started at the station with the opening of the Leeds Northern Railway and then along the Battersby line when the first section to Stokesley opened in 1857. [5]
With the full opening of the line to Grosmont in 1865, four out and back services to Whitby per day were worked along the Battersby line. [6] The timetable from 1906 shows that the station had five stopping services each way on both lines; the services south went to Northallerton and the services on the line to Stokesley originated in Stockton and ran through to Whitby. [7] By 1922, this was down to four services on the Battersby line, and by the time of the closure of that line to passengers in 1954, the service ran to only two trains per day through Picton. [8]
The station remained open for a further six years for local services on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe line, and was closed to passengers in 1960. [9] The station closed to goods traffic in January 1964, [10] with the goods yard being used by a stone merchant. The stationmasters house still stands, but the other buildings have all been demolished. [11]
The line through the site remains open as part of the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe line. [3]
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is a heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England, that runs through the North York Moors National Park. First opened in 1836 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway, the railway was planned in 1831 by George Stephenson as a means of opening up trade routes inland from the then important seaport of Whitby. The line between Grosmont and Rillington was closed in 1965 and the section between Grosmont and Pickering was reopened in 1973 by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd. The preserved line is now a tourist attraction and has been awarded several industry accolades.

The Forge Valley Line was a 16-mile-long branch of the North Eastern Railway between Seamer and Pickering in North Yorkshire, England. The line was intended to link Scarborough with Pickering. Guisborough railway station was the terminus of the Middlesbrough and Guisborough Railway. It served the town of Guisborough in North Yorkshire, England. The station was opened to goods in November 1853, and to passenger traffic on 25 February 1854. The station was closed to passengers, along with the entire Nunthorpe–Guisborough branch, on 2 March 1964, with freight being withdrawn in August 1964.

The station was located 16 miles (26 km) south of Stockton and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Battersby station.
Sexhow railway station was a railway station built to serve the hamlet of Sexhow in North Yorkshire, England. The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland's railway line between Picton and Stokesley, which opened in 1857. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby & Pickering Railway at Grosmont. Sexhow station was closed in 1954 to passengers and four years later to goods. The station was located 13 miles (21 km) south of Stockton, and 3.75 miles (6.04 km) west of Battersby railway station.
Beckhole Incline was a steep, rope-worked gradient on the railway line between Whitby and Pickering, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England. Opened in May 1836 as part of the horse-worked Whitby & Pickering Railway, the line was operated by three railway companies before becoming redundant on the opening of a diversionary line to the east that allowed through working by steam engines on the entire line. Although the incline was closed to regular traffic in 1865, it was used for a very brief period in 1872, to test a special locomotive intended for railways with steep gradients.
