The participation of Poland in the Turkvision Song Contest was expected to begin in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Turkvision Song Contest 2016. The national broadcaster responsible for the selection process of Poland's participants has yet to be known. Poland had selected Olga Shimanskaya with her song "Masal gibi bu dünya", as their debut entry. However, the 2016 contest was subsequently cancelled due to the December 2016 Istanbul bombings, leading Poland to debut at the 2020 contest four years later,

Origins of the contest

Turkvision is an annual song contest which was created by TÜRKSOY in cooperation with the Turkish music channel TMB TV. Based on the similar format of the Eurovision Song Contest, Turkvision focuses primarily on participating Turkic countries and regions. The participating countries and regions have to take part in the Semi Final. A juror from each nation awards between 1 and 10 points for every entry, except their own. An amount of 12 to 15 nations qualify for the Grand Final where the jury determines the winner. TÜRKSOY has stated that televoting is going to be introduced in the future. [1] Unlike the Eurovision Song Contest in which the winning country proceeds to host the following year's event, hosting of the Turkvision Song Contest takes place in the country or region that is also hosting the Turkish Capital of Culture. History

Turkvision Song Contest 2016

On 30 November 2016, it was announced that Poland would be making their Turkvision debut at the 2016 edition, and had internally selected Olga Shimanskaya with the song "Masal gibi bu dünya". [3] However, it was later confirmed that both of the 2016 contests had been cancelled due to the December 2016 Istanbul bombings. [4]

Turkvision Song Contest 2017

Following the cancellation of the Turkvision Song Contest 2016, it was confirmed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in Kazakhstan, that the 2017 edition would take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, and would coincide with other events taking place in the city as part of Expo 2017. [4] The contest was originally going to be held at the Barys Arena, [5] with the two semi-finals taking place on 8 and 9 September, and the final on 10 September 2017. [6] However, on 27 March 2017, it was announced that the dates and venue had subsequently been changed, with the Saryarka Velodrome as the new venue, and the contest itself taking place on 29 and 31 August 2017. [7] Poland confirmed on 28 February, that they would continue with their decision to debut at the Turkvision Song Contest, and will stick with their selected representative Olga Shimanskaya and her song "Masal gibi bu dünya" to mark their debut at the Turkvision Song Contest 2017. [8]

Turkvision Song Contest 2020

Poland debuted in the Turkvision Song Contest 2020, represented by the song "Doğma Yerlər" performed by Mishelle (Olga Natskowicz). The song was written in Azerbaijani, and composed by Dmitriy Kireenkov and Elcan Rzayev. [9] They performed 9th on the night of the contest, following Azerbaijan and preceding Tatarstan. This debut performance earned Poland an 18th place out of 26 finalists.

Azerbaijan in the Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Azerbaijan in the Turkvision Song Contest first began in Eskişehir, Turkey, at the inaugural edition of the Turkvision Song Contest in 2013. Azad Azerbaijan TV (ATV) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2013. Farid Hasanov was the first representative for Azerbaijan at the Turkvision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Yaşa", which qualified from the semifinals and won the contest, achieving two-hundred and ten points in the grand final. Azerbaijan continued to participate in the contest, and sent Elvin Ordubadli as their representative in the Turkvision Song Contest 2014, with the song "Divlərin yalnızlığı", which finished in ninth place, achieving 177 points in the grand final.

Moldova in the Turkvision Song Contest

Moldova has never participated in the Turkvision Song Contest. Moldova was expected to participate in the 2016 contest in Istanbul, Turkey, however the 2016 contest was subsequently cancelled due to the December 2016 Istanbul bombings. Moldova had selected the song "Yallah Yallah!", performed by Pelageya Stefoglo, as their debut entry. Moldova are expected to participate in the upcoming 2020 contest, held online in Istanbul. Pelageya Stefoglo was again internally selected as the Moldovan artist.

Albania in the Turkvision Song Contest

Albania has participated in the Turkvision Song Contest 3 times since their debut in the 2014 contest in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia. Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants since their debut in 2014. Xhoi Bejko was the first representative for Albania at the Turkvision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Hava ve Ates", which failed to qualify from the semi-finals, finishing in nineteenth place and achieving 154 points. Albania continued to participate in the contest, and sent Xhoi Bejko and Visar Rexhepi as their representatives in the Turkvision Song Contest 2015, with the song "Adi Hasret", which finished in eighth place, receiving the same total of points as in their previous participation.

Russia in the Turkvision Song Contest

The debut of Russia in the Turkvision Song Contest was originally announced as taking place at the Turkvision Song Contest 2013. However, upon the publication of the finalised participation list, Russia no longer appeared as taking part. Although, several Federal subjects of Russia, have competed in the Turkvision Song Contest ever since its inaugural contest in 2013.

Turkvision Song Contest 2016

The Turkvision Song Contest 2016 would have been the fourth edition of the Turkvision Song Contest, and was scheduled to take place at the Yahya Kemal Beyatli Cultural Centre, in Istanbul, Turkey, and organised by TMB TV and Azad Azerbaijan TV.

Kazakhstan in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Kazakhstan in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest first began in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. Adam Media Group (AMG) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Tursynkhan Yerkin was the first representative for Kazakhstan at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Samğa", which finished in second place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of one-hundred and thirteen points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Kazakhstan have awarded the most points to Albania, Găgăuzia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine. They have received the most points from Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Găgăuzia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine. Kazakhstan will be hosting the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2017 at the Saryarka Velodrome, in Astana.

Odessa ODTRK (OODTRK) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Albina Kazanzhi was the first representative for Ukraine at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Dostluk", which finished in fifth place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of one-hundred and five points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Ukraine have awarded the most points to Azerbaijan, Gagauzia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. They have received the most points from Găgăuzia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

North Macedonia in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of North Macedonia in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest first began in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Tolga Mazhar was the first representative for Macedonia at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Hadi Benimle", which finished in last place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of eighty-nine points. İrem Kayaali was the first representative for Romania at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Sihirbaz", which finished in sixth place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of one-hundred and two points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Romania have awarded the most points to Kazakhstan. They have received the most points from Albania, Azerbaijan, and Belarus. Uzbekistan in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Uzbekistan in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest was originally planned to begin in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. National Television and Radio Company of Uzbekistan (MTRK) was responsible for the selection process of their participant, for their debut in 2015. Yasmina Garibova was selected internally by the national broadcaster as Uzbekistan's first representative for the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015. However, they withdrew from the contest for reasons unknown.

Georgia in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Georgia in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest first began in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Şaban Memmedov was the first representative for Kosovo at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Seninle Bagli Arzular", which finished in third place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of one-hundred and twelve points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Georgia have awarded the most points to Azerbaijan, Belarus, Găgăuzia, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. The participation of Belarus in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest first began in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. Belarusian Television and Radio Company (BTRC) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Fateh Hüseyin was the first representative for Belarus at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Usaqlarin Şehri", which finished in eleventh place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of ninety points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Belarus have awarded the most points to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Romania. They have received the most points from Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The participation of Kosovo in the Bala Turkvision Song Contest first began in Istanbul, Turkey, at the inaugural Bala Turkvision Song Contest in 2015. Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK) have been responsible for the selection process of their participants, since their debut in 2015. Ela Kazaz was the first representative for Kosovo at the Bala Turkvision Song Contest 2015 with the song "Yeni Yil", which finished in tenth place out of thirteen participating entries, achieving a score of ninety-three points. As of Bala Turkvision 2015, Kosovo have awarded the most points to Georgia, and Macedonia. They have received the most points from Albania, and Macedonia. Kosovo participated in this competition for Serbia.

Latvia in the Turkvision Song Contest

The participation of Latvia in the Turkvision Song Contest was expected to begin in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Turkvision Song Contest 2016. The national broadcaster responsible for the selection process of Latvia's participants has yet to be known. Latvia had selected Oksana Bilera with her song "Yakışıyor bize bu sevgi", as their debut entry. However, the 2016 contest was subsequently cancelled due to the December 2016 Istanbul bombings.

Kazakh Uyghurs in the Turkvision Song Contest

The Kazakh Uyghurs participated in the Turkvision Song Contest for the first time at the Turkvision Song Contest 2020, hosted in Istanbul, Turkey.
