The Porsche 984 Junior (Also known as the 984) was a 2-door roadster concept from the German automobile manufacturer Porsche, that was in development between 1984 and 1987. It was designed to be a small, affordable and fuel-efficient sports car similar to the Porsche 924, albeit with a lower sales price. [1] It was conceptualized in cooperation with Spanish automaker SEAT, although Porsche eventually pressed forward with development on their own. [2] The entire project was discontinued in early 1988.
The Porsche 984 concept was inspired by a joint project done with SEAT, and together the two companies birthed the "Porsche PS", which was never prototyped. A 1.5 L inline-four watercooled engine, officially codenamed "System Porsche", was developed shortly after to go along with the PS, although SEAT later kept it and used it in the first generation SEAT Ibiza. [3] [4] A 2.0 L flat-four engine developed entirely by Porsche was prepared for use in the 984 instead.
SEAT eventually left the project, and Porsche chose to proceed with the development of the concept alone. According to Porsche, the car was designed to appeal to a younger audience, with a planned price that was somewhere in the area of 40,000 DM (Approx. US$66,000 adjusted for inflation) [5] Had it gone into production, it would have likely replaced the Porsche 924 as the entry-level vehicle in their lineup.
In spite of whatever promise the prototype may have shown, plummeting sales worldwide (both at Porsche and across the automotive industry) following Black Monday in October of 1987 rendered the continuation of development economically infeasible. This brought the project to a halt by March of 1988. [6]
The 984 concept was very similar to the aforementioned Porsche-SEAT (PS) project, and were very similar in terms of what they were intended to be. Both were to be a lightweight, fun to drive, and affordable vehicle, and the rear-engine configuration, among other features, seemed to reflect these aspirations. During development, large portions of the manufactured prototypes contained parts throughout both the interior and exterior that were pulled from other Porsche models of the era. (Including the Porsche 944 and 924, as well as the Porsche 911) [7]
Much unlike the 924, the designers at Porsche ostensibly planned for the car to incorporate an optional all-wheel drive system, as well as a hard-top. [8] These features, especially all-wheel drive and its rear engine layout, would help to separate it from other roadsters of the era, such as the Mazda MX-5. (which would be put into production by Mazda just two years after the development of the 984 was cancelled) Porsche would, despite the end of the 984 project, later go on to produce the Boxster during the 1990s, which was designed to serve a very similar purpose to the 984 concept.
The only engine used in the 984 concept was the 2.0 L Volkswagen Type 4 engine found in the Porsche 914, which was, in stark contrast to the 1.5 L "System Porsche" engine found in the SEAT Ibiza, an aircooled unit. Despite this flat-four being used in the prototype models, an all new flat-four engine was supposedly also in development for use in aircraft, as well as a final, production model of the 984. [9] It made 99 kW (135 bhp; 135 PS), and according to track tests that were done by Porsche during development, the vehicle itself had a top speed of approximately 220 km/h (137 mph). The engine within allowed the 984 a 0-60 time of roughly 8 seconds. [10] It is important to note, however, that the planned cabriolet and all-wheel drive models may have impacted those results, had they ever been developed.

The Porsche 928 is a grand touring car with a 2+2 seating layout manufactured by Porsche AG of Germany from 1978 to 1995. Initially conceived to address changes in the automotive market, it represented Porsche's first fully in-house design for a production vehicle and was intended to potentially replace the Porsche 911 as the company's flagship model. The 928 aimed to blend the performance and handling characteristics of a sports car with the comfort, spaciousness, and ride quality of a luxury car. Porsche executives believed that the 928 would have broader appeal compared to the compact, somewhat outdated, and slow-selling air-cooled 911. Notably, it was Porsche's inaugural production model powered by a V8 engine located at the front, and it achieved remarkable top speeds, earning recognition upon its 1978 release by winning the European Car of the Year award. The Autocar described it as a "super car" in 1980.
The Porsche 924 is a sports car produced by Porsche in Neckarsulm, Germany, from 1976 until 1988. A two-door, 2+2 coupé, the 924 replaced the 912E and 914 as the company's entry-level model.
The Porsche 944 is a sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche from 1982 until 1991. A front-engine, rear-wheel drive mid-level model based on the 924 platform, the 944 was available in coupé or cabriolet body styles, with either naturally aspirated or turbocharged engines. With over 163,000 cars produced, the 944 was the most successful sports car in Porsche's history until the introductions of the Boxster and 997 Carrera.
The Porsche 968 is a sports car manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche AG from 1991 until 1995. It was the final evolution of a series of water-cooled front-engine rear wheel drive models that began almost 20 years earlier with the introduction of the 924. It was intended to take over the entry-level position in the company lineup from the 944, which much of the vehicle was derived from. The 968 was Porsche's last new front-engined vehicle until the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne in 2003.

The Porsche 986 is the internal designation for the first generation Boxster, a mid-engine two-seater roadster built by German automobile manufacturer Porsche. Introduced in late 1996, the Boxster, based on the 1993 Boxster Concept, was Porsche's first road vehicle to be originally designed as a roadster since the 550 Spyder. The Boxster's name is derived from the word "boxer", referring to the vehicle's flat or "boxer" engine, and the name "speedster", first seen on the 356. Powered by a 2.5-litre flat six-cylinder engine, the base model was upgraded to a 2.7-litre engine in the year 2000 and a new Boxster S variant was introduced with a 3.2-litre engine. In 2003, styling and engine output was upgraded on both variants. The 986 was succeeded by the 987 which retained the Boxster roadster and added the Cayman fixed-roof coupé body style.
The Porsche 996 is the fifth generation of the 911 model sports car manufactured by the German automaker Porsche from 1997 until 2006. It was replaced by the 997 in 2004, but the high performance Turbo S, GT2 and GT3 variants remained in production until 2006. The 996 had little in common with its predecessor, with the first all new chassis platform since the original 911 and a new water-cooled engine. Technically, it was a major change, a complete break from the original car other than the overall layout.

Designed by Benjamin Dimson through January 1986, it featured significant styling revisions over previous 911 models, most prominently the more integrated bumpers. The Smart Roadster (W452) is a two-door, two-seater sports car classified in the S-segment in Europe. It was first introduced in 2002 by Smart GmbH.
