Henichesk Seaport is a sea trade port, that is affiliated with the Port of Berdiansk, on the shores of the Henichesk Strait, which connects the Utlyuk estuary and the Syvash Bay of the Sea of Azov, [1] in the city of Henichesk, [2] Kherson Oblast. [3] Henichesk Seaport is managed by the Administration of Berdiansk Sea Commercial Port [4] - a branch of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority under the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure (Ukraine).
Berdiansk or Berdyansk is a port city in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast (province) in south-eastern Ukraine. It is on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov, which is the northern extension of the Black Sea. It serves as an administrative center of Berdiansk Raion (district), though it does not belong to the raion. The city is named after the river Berda forming Berdianska spit at the foot of which it is located. Berdiansk is home to a safari zoo, water park, museums, health resorts with mud baths and climatic treatments, and numerous water sport activities. It is currently under Russian military occupation.

During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia occupied vast portions of the territory of Ukraine. Some territories, more precisely parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts as well as the entire Autonomous Republic of Crimea, were already under Russian occupation since 2014. According to a report in The Guardian, partisan groups began to be organized in the summer of 2021, trained by Ukrainian Special Forces. After the start of the invasion, these individuals became active in those territories occupied by Russia, which included cities like Kherson and Melitopol.
