The Port of Berdiansk is a seaport in the city of Berdiansk, Ukraine, on the Sea of Azov. [4] It is the only port in the Zaporizhzhia Oblast and one of Ukraine's two Azov ports (along with Mariupol).
According to the Law "On Seaports of Ukraine," the functions of the seaport administration are performed by the Berdiansk branch of the state enterprise of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. The seaport is guarded by the Berdyansk Border Detachment.
Since 27 February 2022, Berdiansk has been under Russian occupation.
The Sea of Azov is an inland shelf sea in Eastern Europe connected to the Black Sea by the narrow Strait of Kerch, and sometimes regarded as a northern extension of the Black Sea. The Project 58155 Gyurza-M class is a series of small armored gunboats in service with the Ukrainian Navy. The first two vessels were laid down at the Kuznia na Rybalskomu shipbuilding plant in October 2012. Originally it was planned to build nine such vessels by 2017. In December 2013 the Ministry of Defence withdrew its contract. The class is named after the Levant viper, Гюрза, Hiurza, in Ukrainian.

Nikolay Stepanovich Kobozev was one of the founders of Berdiansk, and its first mayor. He was a merchant of the 1st Guild, a fishing magnate, and a hereditary honorary citizen of Berdiansk since 1851.

The Kerch Strait incident was an international incident that occurred on 25 November 2018 in the Kerch Strait, during which the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) coast guard fired upon and captured three Ukrainian Navy vessels after they attempted to transit from the Black Sea into the Sea of Azov through the strait on their way to the port of Mariupol. It was the first time that Russian forces had openly engaged Ukrainian forces during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Russia occupied vast portions of the territory of Ukraine, having already occupied parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts as well as all of Crimea since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2014. Partisan groups began to be organized in mid-2022. These groups have been involved in intelligence-gathering, sabotage, and assassinations. Much of their activity has taken place in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The Berdyansk Border Detachment (MUN 1491) is a brigade level detachment of the Southern Regional Department of the State Border Service of Ukraine. The detachment guards the Sea of Azov and the "border" with Crimea in two raions of Zaporizhia Oblast as well as guarding the Port of Berdiansk and Zaporizhzhia International Airport with a total length of 395.5 km. Due to the Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, its operations along the coast are currently suspended and it currently operates against Russian forces on the frontlines.
