Synthesis

Dissolution of potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) in aqua regia:

3K2[PdCl4] + 6HCl + 2HNO3 → 3K2[PdCl6] + 2NO + 4H2O

Passing chlorine through a suspension of potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) in a solution of potassium chloride: [4]

K2[PdCl4] + Cl2 → K2[PdCl6]

Physical properties

The compound forms red-brown crystals of cubic crystal system. [5]

Poorly soluble in water.

Chemical properties

The compound decomposes when heated or in a hot concentrated hydrochloric acid solution:

K2[PdCl6] → K2[PdCl4] + Cl2

Uses

The compound is used in photography. [6] Also used as an organic reagent and pharmaceutical intermediate. [7]
