Pranav Soorma

Pranav Soorma (born 1994) is an Indian para athlete who won the gold medal in the men's club throw F51 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. [1] He also set an Asian Games record in the event with a throw of 30.01metres. [2] [3]

Background and education

Soorma hails from Faridabad, Haryana. He did his schooling in St. Paul's School, Delhi. [4] He completed his post-graduation from Delhi School of Economics. He works as an Assistant Manager in the Bank of Baroda. In 2011 at the age of 16, Soorma met with an accident that injured his spinal cord. [5] His father, Sanjeev, quit his job to support his son to take up sports. [6] Athletes whose movement was affected to a high degree in the trunk, legs and hands are qualified for the F51 club throw event. They rely on their shoulders and arm to generate power and take the throw while seated. [7] Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him for his resilience. [8]

Career

Soorma won the Asian Para Games gold with a record on 23 October 2023. [5] Earlier in 2023, he also won gold in the Serbia Open. In 2022, he bagged silver and gold at the Tunisia Grand Prix. In 2019, he won silver at the Beijing Grand Prix. [5] In the inaugural Khelo India Para games, he improved his Asian record by throwing a distance of 33.54 for his gold medal in December 2023 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. [9] [10]

She qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, following her second consecutive appearance in the World Para Athletics Championships. She has also competed and won medals in several IPC Grand Prix held at Berlin in 2016, Dubai in 2017, Tunisia in 2018 and Dubai in 2023. Ekta also won a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China in the Club Throw event.

Esha Singh is an Indian amateur shooter. She became the national champion in the 10m Air Pistol category in 2018. She clinched an Olympic quota berth in the 10m Air Pistol category for the Paris Olympic Games at the Asian Qualifier at Jakarta on 8 January 2024. She was also conferred the Arjun Award for 2023 but missed the event on 9 January 2024 due to the Asian qualifier.

Nishad Kumar is an Indian paralympian and high jumper. In the 2022 Asian Para Games, he won a gold medal in the men's high jump T47 at Hangzhou, China.

Dhanush Srikanth is an Indian deaf sports shooter. He made his Deaflympic debut at the age of 19 representing India at the 2021 Summer Deaflympics. Despite his deafness, he has been competing in Indian shooting circuit and has been regarded as one of the regular faces in Indian shooting fraternity. He is currently coached by former Indian sports shooter Gagan Narang at the Guns for Glory Shooting Academy in Hyderabad.

Prayag Chauhan is an Indian amateur boxer. He won a gold medal in 2013 at the Asian junior boxing championship held in Kazakhstan and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2015.

Divyakriti Singh is an Indian equestrienne. She won a gold medal in team event in Equestrian Dressage at the 2022 Asian Games held at Hangzhou, China. She is the first Indian woman to be conferred the Arjuna Award in Equestrian for outstanding performance in Sports and Games 2023 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports by the Government of India.

Pavithra Vengatesh is an Indian athlete from Tamil Nadu state. She represents India in the pole vault event. She is part of the Indian team for the Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. Pavithra's personal best is 4.10m. The national record of 4.15m stands in the name of V S Surekha set in 2014.

Ritu Negi is an Indian kabaddi player from HImachal Pradesh. She is the captain of the Indian team which won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games. The Indian team defeated Chinese Taipei in the final on 7 October 2023.

Rachana Patel is a para athlete from Gujarat. She won a bronze medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games. She claimed bronze in Badminton women's double in the SH6 category along with Nithya Sre Sivan on 25 October 2023 at Hangzhou, China.

Pooja is a para athlete from Haryana. She represented India at the 2022 Asian Para Games and won a silver medal in the women's discus throw F54/55 event on 25 October 2023.

Shialesh Kumar is a para jumper from Bihar. He represented India in the men's high jump at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China. He won a gold medal in the men's T63 high jump event clearing 1.82 meters on 23 October 2023.

Soundarya Kumar Pradhan is an Indian para chess player from Odisha. The visually challenged chess player was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. He won the Men's Team Rapid VI-B1 gold medal on 28 October 2023 along with Darpan Inani and Ashwin Makwana. He also won a silver medal in the individual event.
