Deepthi Jeevanji (born 27 September 2003) is an Indian para-athlete. [1] She won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympics in the 400 meters T20 race. At the 2024 World Championships, she set a world record of 55.06s. [2] She previously set the Asian Para Games record in 2023. [3] She broke the 55.12s record of Breanna Clark. [3]

Early life

Jeevanji was born in Kalleda village, Warangal district, Telangana. Her parents, Jeevanji Yadhagiri and Jeevanji Dhanalaxmi, had a half-acre agricultural land, and also used to work at others' farms as daily wage labourers. [6] She was spotted by her school PET teacher in her Class 9 in Warangal. Later, she came under coach Ramesh, the Indian coach of the Junior team. [7] She was also supported by Pullela Gopichand, who suggested that she be tested at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disability in Hyderabad. There, she was certified under the mentally impaired category, after the relevant tests, and that allowed her to participate as para athlete. [7] [8]

Career

Jeevanji was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, where she won the gold medal [9] with a new Asian Para record and the Games record on 24 October 2023 in her pet event, the 400m run in T20 category. [10] [11] She clocked a time of 56.69s to take the gold ahead of Thailand’s Orawan Kaising. [12] Japan's Niina Kanno won the bronze. [13] She was selected to the Indian team that took part at 2024 world Paralympics championships in Kobe, Japan Championships in May in the 100m and 200m (Category F) after two gold in the All-India Inter-University Championships gold at Bhubaneshwar.

Earlier, she qualified for the finals setting a new Asian record with a time of 56.18 seconds and secured a Paris 2024 Paralympics quota.with a second place in the 100m (Category F) at the Indian U20 Federation Cup at Chhotu Bhai Purani Sports Complex, Nadiad. [14]

Anandan Gunasekaran is an Indian track and field para-athletics runner who competes in the men's 100m, 200m and 400m events in the T64 category. He has participated at many international events. In 2018, he represented India at the Asian Para Games 2018 which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 6 to 13 October 2018 and won silver in the 400 meters and bronze in the 200 meters. He is the first athlete in the country to have won 3 gold medals in the Military World Games 2019 held in Wuhan, China, first Asian blade runner to create a new Asian record of completing 400m race in 52.66s at the 2018 National Open Para-Athletic Championship.

Sumit Antil is an Indian javelin thrower. He is a double gold medalist at the Paralympics, having won the men's javelin throw F64 event at the 2020 Paralympics and the 2024 Paralympics. He set a new Paralympic record both times with his throws of 68.55 m and 70.59 m. He is a two-time gold medalist at the World Para Championships. In 2022, Antil not only won the gold medal at the Asian Para Games but also made the para-javelin WR of 73.29 m. He is a six-time world record holder.

Rakshitha Raju is an Indian runner, who is visually impaired. She takes part in the women's 1500 metres T11 category. She was selected for the Indian team that took part in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games. She won the gold medal Asian Para Games behind China's Shanshan He. Later, Shanshan was disqualified and Raju was promoted to take the gold medal. She clocked 5 minutes, 21.45 seconds. Being a visually handicapped runner, Rakshitha completed the race with the help of a guide Rahul Balakrishna.

Thulasimathi Murugesan is a badminton paralympian from Tamil Nadu. She represented India at the 2022 Asian Para Games held at Gangzhou, China. She won three medals in para badminton competitions, SL3-SU5 and SU5 classes. She made history as the first Indian woman shuttler to win a Paralympic silver medal, following a remarkable journey to the final in the SU5 category.

Simran Sharma is a visually-impaired para-athlete from Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh. She qualified to represent India in the 2024 Summer Paralympics and won a bronze medal in the Women's 200 m T12 final on 7 September 2024. In the Women's 100 m T12, she qualified first in her heat with a season's best of 12.33s but could only finish 4th in the finals despite a better time of 12.31 s.

Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan is an Indian para-badminton player. She won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in the women's singles event. Sivan has also won three bronze medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games in the singles, mixed and women's doubles events.

Pooja Ojha is an Indian para athlete from Madhya Pradesh who competes in canoeing. She qualified for the 2024 Summer Paralympics in the canoeing women's KL1 event. India earned quota places for the following events through the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany; and 2024 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Szeged, Hungary. Earlier, she represented India at the 2022 Asian Para Games at Hangzhou, China.
