Psalidopus is a genus of shrimp placed in its own family, Psalidopodidae, and superfamily, Psalidopodoidea. [1] It comprises three species, one in the western Atlantic Ocean, and two in the Indo-Pacific. [2] [3]

Psalidopus barbouri

P. barbouri occurs on continental and insular slopes from Florida, the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico, to parts of the Caribbean Sea, perhaps extending as far south as Suriname. [2] P. barbouri lives on steeply sloping soft muddy bottoms, sometimes mixed with sand, at depths of 400–800 m, where the temperature ranges from 6.1 to 10.0 °C (43.0 to 50.0 °F). [2] Adults have a carapace length of 13–32 millimetres (0.51–1.26 in), with the total length of the animal, from the tip of the rostrum to the tip of the tail, being up to 5.5 times longer than the carapace. [2]

Psalidopus huxleyi

P. huxleyi occurs on continental and insular slopes across the Indian Ocean, including the Laccadive Sea, off southern India, the Andaman Sea and the Timor Sea, as well as in the western Pacific Ocean from southern Japan to the Philippines, the Sulu Sea, and the Celebes Sea. [2] P. huxleyi lives on steeply sloping bottoms of various compositions and consistencies, at depths of 500–100 m, where the temperature ranges from 5.9 to 13.6 °C (42.6 to 56.5 °F). [2] The carapace is 10–30 mm (0.39–1.18 in) long. [2]

Psalidopus tosaensis

P. tosaensis lives at greater depth (c. 2800 m) and lower temperature – 1.6 °C (34.9 °F) – than either of the other species of Psalidopus. [3] Although it is geographically closer to P. huxleyi, it appears to be more closely related to P. barbouri. [3]

The family Alvinocarididae comprises 7 extant genera.

<i>Mirocaris</i> Genus of crustaceans

Mirocaris is a genus of shrimp associated with hydrothermal vents. Sometimes considered the only genus of the family Mirocarididae, Mirocaris is usually placed in the broader family Alvinocarididae. Mirocaris is characterized by a dorsoventrally flattened, non-dentate rostrum, as well as the possession of episodes on the third maxilliped through to the fourth pteropod. The genus contains two species, M. fortunata and M. indica. The two species are found in different oceans, and can be distinguished by the pattern of setation on the claw of the first pereiopod.

Physetocaris is a monotypic genus of caridean shrimp, containing a single species, Physetocaris microphthalma.

Heterocarpus ensifer is a species of deep-water shrimp. The nominate subspecies is found in the Atlantic Ocean from Spain and Madeira to Angola and from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea; other subspecies occur in the Pacific Ocean and around the Philippines and Indonesia. Despite being one of the most abundant shrimp in some areas, its biology is still poorly known. These deep water crustaceans are most copious between 300 and 400m. Their distribution demonstrates an ability to adapt well to distinct environments. It is generally found at depths of 200–885 m (656–2,904 ft).

Brachynotus sexdentatus is a species of crab in the family Varunidae. It is native to the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, and became established for a time in Swansea Docks. It grows to a maximum carapace width of 18 mm (0.71 in), and lives in shallow water on muddy bottoms.

<i>Caridina spongicola</i> Species of crustacean

Caridina spongicola is a small species of freshwater shrimp from Sulawesi (Indonesia) that reaches 0.64 to 1.27 cm in length. In the wild it strictly lives on an undescribed species of freshwater sponge, making it one of only two known commensal species of freshwater shrimp. It is popularly known as the harlequin shrimp, and also sometimes Celebes beauty shrimp or sponge shrimp in the aquarium trade. It is often confused with Caridina woltereckae, a larger and more contrastingly colored species found in the same region as C. spongicola.

Processa edulis is a species of caridean shrimp found in shallow water in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It mostly inhabits seagrass beds and eelgrass flats, hiding by day and feeding at night. A common name for it is nika shrimp.
