Thane is a metropolitan city in Maharashtra, India. It is situated in the north-eastern portion of the Salsette Island. Thane city is entirely within Thane taluka, one of the seven talukas of Thane district; also, it is the headquarters of the namesake district. With a population of 1,841,488 distributed over a land area of about 147 square kilometres (57 sq mi), Thane city is the 15th most populated city in India with a population of 1,890,000 according to the 2011 census.

Thane Creek is an inlet in the shoreline of the Arabian Sea that isolates the city of Mumbai (Bombay) from the Konkan region of the Indian mainland. It comprises the area between Mumbra Retibunder and the Mankhurd-Vashi Bridge. The creek is divided into two parts. The first part lies between Ghodbunder and Thane (Thana), a section from where the Ulhas river flows from the north of Mumbai Island to meet the Arabian Sea on the west. The second part of the waterway lies between the city of Thane and the Arabian Sea at Trombay / Uran, before the Gharapuri islands.

The township, like the rest of Navi Mumbai, is divided into sectors, which are further divided into plots. The residential and commercial areas of Kalamboli are divided by the NH 4 highway. Roadpali, a region to the north of Kalamboli, is developing at a faster rate than the latter with many residential projects coming up due to availability of land. Roadpali is located along the Taloja Link Road. Kalamboli also houses the Navi Mumbai Police Headquarters. CIDCO is the nodal administrative body for Kalamboli node. Kalamboli also has a Sewage Water Treatment Plant owned by CIDCO. Kalamboli is now governed by Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC). The terminal of Mumbai-Pune Expressway is at Kalamboli. It also has Navi Mumbai's largest marble market alongside the Sion Panvel Highway.

The Navi Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system under construction in the Indian city of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. The planning and construction of the Navi Mumbai Metro is being overseen by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The system is planned to consist of five rail lines covering a total distance of 106.4 kilometres (66.1 mi). The foundation stone for the project was laid on 1 May 2011; following construction delays, the metro's first line was projected to open in 2020. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which caused lockdowns, curfews, and lack of labour, which resulted in several delays in construction, the deadline is pushed to 2022 for completion of the first line of Navi Mumbai Metro. The metro's technological infrastructure and rolling stock are being provided by Ansaldo STS, Tata Projects and CSR Zhuzhou.

Line 1 of the Navi Mumbai Metro is part of the rapid transit rail system for the city of Navi Mumbai, India. The 23.40 km line consists of 20 metro stations from Belapur to Khandeshwar. It is expected to cost ₹4,163 crore (US$520 million). On 7 May 2021, State-run town planning authority CIDCO conducted a successful trial run on the approach route to and the test track at Taloja metro depot, and claimed that it was "successful in all respects". The metro was supposed to be operational by 2016, but remains in limbo as on February, 2022.

Thane–Belapur Road is a major road connecting the city of Thane with Navi Mumbai. The southern end of Thane–Belapur road starts at the Sion Panvel Highway near Juinagar. The road passes through a busy Thane – Belapur region and generally runs in a north-south direction. During the stretch between Turbhe and Dighe, the Thane–Belapur road runs completely parallel to the Trans-Harbour Line of Mumbai Suburban Railway and the stations of Airoli, Rabale, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane and Turbhe all have direct access from this road. This road also connects the cities of Thane, Kalwa, and Airoli to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The Vikhroli-Kopar Khairne Link Road (VKLR), also known as the JVLR-Kopar Khairane-Ghansoli Bridge, is a proposed 7.5 km to 10 km, freeway grade road bridge connecting the Indian city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. The new link road would start at Eastern Express Highway (EEH) where Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) ends in Vikhroli, then cross Thane Creek and Harbour railway line and will terminate at Kopar Khairane in Navi Mumbai before ending on Thane- Belapur road. The link would be a six-lane road of about 10 km in length including a 2-kilometre-long (1.2 mi) bridge over the Thane creek. At present motorists have to take either the Vashi Bridge or Mulund-Airoli Link Road to go to Navi Mumbai and Pune. The new road will help motorists save time and fuel. The project is estimated to cost around ₹ 550 to 1200 crore. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) appointed N P Bridging, as designing consultants for the project, which was supposed to submit the final report on the link road by mid-September 2016.
