Rajesh Bindal (born 16 April 1961) is a judge of Supreme Court of India. He is the former chief justice of Allahabad High Court. He has also earlier served as the acting chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the Calcutta High Court.
Bindal was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2006. [1] On 11 November,he was recommended for a transfer to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court,the common high court for the union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. [2]
On 9 December 2020,Bindal was appointed by the President of India to serve as the acting chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court following the retirement of Gita Mittal. [3] On 5 January 2021,following the elevation of Justice Pankaj Mithal as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court,Justice Bindal was transferred as a Judge to the Calcutta High Court. [4] Following the retirement of T. B. Radhakrishnan,he was appointed by the president to serve as the acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on 29 April. [5]
He was elevated as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on 9 October 2021 and took oath on 11 October 2021.
Bindal was on the two judge bench along with justice B.S. Walia which quashed the Punjab Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes (Reservation in Services) Act,2006. The legislation granted 20% reservations in promotions for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in C and D category government services and 14% in A and B category government services. [6]

It was established as the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on 26 March 1928 by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. The seat of the court shifts between the summer capital Srinagar and winter capital Jammu. The court has a sanctioned judge strength of 17,13 of whom are permanent judges,and 4 are additional judges. Since 18 July 2024,the acting chief justice of the court is Tashi Rabstan.
Sukhdev Singh Kang was the fourteenth Governor of Kerala from 25 January 1997 to 18 April 2002. He served as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 19 February 1979 till 23 October 1989 and was subsequently promoted and transferred as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court,a post he held from 24 October 1989 to 14 May 1993. During his tenure E K Nayanar and A K Antony were the Chief Ministers of Kerala. Following his stint as the Governor of Kerala,he was appointed a member of the National Human Rights Commission 1993. The Central Government has approved the appointment of former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court,Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar as the president of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for a period of five years in October 28,2021. Justice Sudhakar has been appointed for a period of five years from the date of appointment or till he attains the age of 67 or until further orders,whichever is earlier.
