The only species is Rolandra fruticosa, native to Central and South America plus the West Indies. It is also reportedly naturalized in Japan and Java. [1] [5]

The actual chemical was isolated by several different groups and its full chemical structure determined in 1965. The first total synthesis was published in 2001.
