SRM University, Andhra Pradesh (SRM AP), also known as SRM University, Amaravati, is a state private university [2] located near Neerukonda village in Mangalagiri mandal of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, India, in the area of the planned capital city Amaravati. The university was established in 2017 by the SRM Trust through the Andhra Pradesh Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2016. [3] It offers undergraduate, postgraduate courses and Ph.D programmes in engineering, liberal arts and basic sciences. [4]

Academics

SRM University, Andhra Pradesh offers undergraduate, postgraduate courses and Ph.D programmes through its two schools, the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, launched in 2017, and the School of Liberal Arts & Basic Sciences, which was launched in 2018. [5] In 2018, a three-year BBA Programme was started under the aegis of the School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences (SLABS) at SRM University-AP. In 2020, an independent school of Business was created as the School of Entrepreneurship and Management Studies (SEAMS) with a BBA (Honours) Programme, MBA Programme in Data Science, Banking and Finance and a PhD Programme. In 2021, SEAMS launched a new MBA Programme specialising in Marketing, Finance and Human Resource Management. SEAMS was rechristened as the Paari School of Business [6] [7] with a BBA (Honours) Programme, MBA Programme, and EMBA programme in 2023 [8]

Leadership

The university is led by the president P. Sathyanarayanan, which serves in this position since its establishment in 2017. [9] The inaugural vice-chancellor (VC) of the university was Jamshed Bharucha who was appointed to this position in July 2018. [10] Bharucha was replaced with Vajja Sambasiva Rao in 2020. [11] In 2022, Manoj K. Arora took his place as VC. [12]

Campus

The campus is designed by Perkins and Will, an American architectural firm, [13] and PTK Architects, an architectural firm based in Chennai, India. [14] It has hostel facilities for about 1500 students and faculty, in five apartments.

It is the twenty-seventh most populous city in Andhra Pradesh and the three-hundredth most populous city in India with a population of 118,167 according to the 2011 Census of India.

Vajja Sambasiva Rao, also known as V. S. Rao is an Indian academician and the former President of NIIT University. Relinquishing his position at NIIT University on 30 June 2020, he embraced the role of Vice-Chancellor at SRM University-AP, Andhra Pradesh from 1 July 2020. He was previously the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and the Director of the Hyderabad Campus of the BITS-Pilani University. He was responsible for establishing BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus. He is an alumnus of BITS-Pilani and had been associated with the university for more than four decades in various capacities. As director, he was regarded as being instrumental in the establishment of the Hyderabad Campus.

The 2019–2024 Amaravati protests, simply known as Amaravati protests, are ongoing demonstrations in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh triggered by the idea of changing the one capital of Amaravati already identified and developed partially, to three capitals of Amaravati, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. This led to concerns that the decision would create chaos and insecurity for farmers who gave their fertile agricultural lands to the government in 29 villages of Guntur district. The protests began in Mandadam, Thullur, Uddandarayunipalem on 18 December 2019. In a few days, the protests spread across Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, in Andhra Pradesh. On 17 December 2020, series of events were done to mark the protests' anniversary.
