Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (Sri Padmavati University) is a women's university in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established as a state university by the Andhra Pradesh legislature in 1983 to provide Higher Education in general & professional areas for women. It is named after the goddess Sri Padmavati, the consort of Lord Venkateswara. The university has approximately 5,000 students. It admits students from all regions of Andhra Pradesh.

Contents

Funds for development are received from the UGC and State Government. The university is accredited with 'A+' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Prof. D. Bharathi, Department of Biosciences & Sericulture, Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam, Tirupati was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor in June 2023.

Academics

Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam is a unitary university with 16 departments having 52 programme options: five postgraduate diploma, four undergraduate, 16 postgraduate, 14 M.Phil., and 14 Ph.D. programmes. Remedial teaching for the academically weaker students and the organisation of pre-examination coaching to backward community students are undertaken.

New features are courses that have a great demand in the job market such as MBA in Media Management, Integrated (five-year) course in Bio Technology, Bachelor of Physical Education and BioInformatics. The university also offers courses in Distance Education mode.

Campus

The campus of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam covers 138 acres (56 hectares) in a semi-urban area at the foot of the sacred Tirumala Hills.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is an independent government trust in India which managed by Andhra Pradesh Government, including the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh. The trust oversees the operations and finances of the richest and the most visited religious center in the world. It is also involved in various social, religious, literary and educational activities. TTD is headquartered at Tirupati and employs about 16,000 people. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao served as Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh for three terms, between 1983 and 1995. He was the first person to hold the office while not a member of the Indian National Congress, while representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which he himself founded in 1982. Rama Rao's time in office saw his ousting in an August 1984 coup after 1½ years in office, while he was abroad in the US undergoing coronary heart surgery. He was removed by Thakur Ram Lal, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, and replaced with Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, the finance minister. Having come back from surgery, Rama Rao regained his position through demonstrating his majority support from members of the Indian Legislative Assembly. He returned to office in September 1984.

Vanaja Iyengar was an Indian mathematician, educationist and the founder vice-chancellor of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam, Tirupati, in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. She was one of the founders of the Andhra Mahila Sabha School of Informatics. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1987.
