San José District is one of fifteen districts of the Azángaro Province in Peru. [1]
The districts of Peru are the third-level country subdivisions of Peru. They are subdivisions of the provinces, which in turn are subdivisions of the larger regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total.
Azángaro Province is a province of the Puno Region in Peru.
Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a country in western South America. Surupana is a 5,162-metre-high (16,936 ft) mountain in the Peruvian Andes. It is situated in the Puno Region, Azángaro Province, San José District. Surupana lies southeast of the mountain Hatun Qurini. By the local people the mountain is venerated as an apu.
Hatun Qurini is a mountain in the Peruvian Andes, about 5,000 metres (16,404 ft) high. It is situated in the Puno Region, Azángaro Province, San José District. Hatun Qurini lies northwest of the mountain Surupana.
The people in the district are mainly indigenous citizens of Quechua descent. Quechua is the language which the majority of the population (80.67%) learnt to speak in childhood, 18.85% of the residents started speaking using the Spanish language (2007 Peru Census). [4]
