Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice (or sometimes simply called Police University) is an Indian state university [1] located at Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

History

The Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice was established in 2012 by the Government of Rajasthan through Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice, Jodhpur Act, 2012, [2] named after Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India.

In 2015, the Sardar Patel University of Police introduced the LL.M./M.A. in criminal law, [3] and co-organized the first counter-terrorism conference in the country. [4] In 2016, it opened a new class to study national, international and transnational criminal law. [5]

Governance

M. L. Kumawat was the first Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university [6] and served until 2015. [7] Bhupendra Singh served as officer on special duty (OSD) for the universality since 2012, before being appointed Pro Vice Chancellor in 2013. He then served as VC of the university in additional charge following Kumawat. [8] In 2018 N.R.K. Reddy was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor [9] and also served as VC in additional charge. [7] Alok Tripathi was appointed as second VC of the university in October 2020. [10]

Academics

The Sardar Patel University of Police, Security and Criminal Justice focuses on teaching and research in the fields of police science, social sciences, criminal law, criminology, public safety, national security and related areas. [11]

Mahendra Lal Kumawat is a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1972 batch of Andhra Pradesh cadre with a range of experience in the national and sub-national governments with a focus on border security, counter-terrorism and counter-Naxalism. The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University is the law school of the Aligarh Muslim University which has a history of over 100 years of teaching and writing law. Law classes were inaugurated by Justice Douglas Straight on December 29, 1891.

Ram Harsh Singh is an Indian practitioner of the Ayurveda system of alternative medicine and the founder vice chancellor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Rajasthan Ayurved University. An Emeritus Professor of Banaras Hindu University and a National Professor of the Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India, he was conferred with the fourth highest civilian honour of Padma Shri, in 2016.

Dev Swarup is an Indian educational administrator. He is first founding vice-chancellor of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Law University. He has been also additional secretary (2019-2020) of University Grants Commission (India) and joint secretary, UGC, New Delhi. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Rajasthan, from 2013-14. He resigned from the University of Rajasthan in November 2014. He is also member of statutory body, General Council of National Law University, Jodhpur.
