The Seventh Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Summit Conference was an event organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on 18 May 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. The conference was organized in response to the serious developments in the State of Palestine.

Final communique

The Final Declaration of the Seventh Extraordinary Islamic Summit was a document that outlined the collective positions and decisions of the OIC member states. The declaration condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and the illegal opening of the American embassy in Al-Quds. [1] [2]

Outcomes

Turkey, serving as OIC president, hosted the summit to condemn Israel's actions in Gaza. [3] [4]

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has urged Muslim countries to sever ties with Israel and reconsider their economic ties with the United States. [5] [6]

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has advocated for a comprehensive and impartial inquiry into the incidents in Gaza. Abbasi, while expressing concern over the reported human rights infringements by the Israeli forces, is expected to reaffirm Pakistan's government and its citizens' support for the creation of a sustainable, independent, and connected Palestine. In response to the violence faced by the Palestinians and aimed at ensuring their safety, the summit called for the creation of an international protection force for the Palestinians. [7] [8]

Aftermath

After the summit, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that he would open the Rafah crossing to Gaza for a month, allowing Palestinians to pass through during Ramadan. [9]

In 2008 the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Hot Winter, also called Operation Warm Winter, in the Gaza Strip, starting on February 29, 2008 in response to Qassam rockets fired from the Strip by Hamas onto Israeli civilians. At least 112 Palestinian militants and civilians, along with three Israelis, were killed, and more than 150 Palestinians and seven Israelis were injured.

Quds Day, officially known as International Quds Day, is an annual pro-Palestinian event held on the last Friday of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to express support for Palestinians and oppose Israel and Zionism. It takes its name from the Arabic-language name for Jerusalem: al-Quds. The event was initiated in 1979 in Iran, shortly after the Islamic Revolution. Nominally, it exists in opposition to Israel's Jerusalem Day, which has been celebrated by Israelis since May 1968 and was declared a national holiday by the Knesset in 1998.

The United States officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel on December 6, 2017. American president Donald Trump, who signed the presidential proclamation, also ordered the relocation of the American diplomatic mission to Israel, formerly located in Tel Aviv. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the U.S. recognition and praised the announcement by the Trump administration. On December 8, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson clarified that Trump's statement "did not indicate any final status for Jerusalem" and "was very clear that the final status, including the borders, would be left to the two parties to negotiate and decide" in reference to the move's impact on the Israeli–Palestinian peace process.

The Sixth Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Summit was a conference organized by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on 13 December 2017. This summit resulted "Istanbul Declaration on Freedom for Al Quds."

The Ninth Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Summit Conference was organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in response to the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. The meeting took place on 18 October 2023 at the General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
