Shamchaurasi is a town and a municipal council in Hoshiarpur district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is also a constituency of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In 2019, the Punjab Government announced that Shamchaurai would be upgraded to a sub-tehsil. [1] Shamchaurasi is home to Sham Chaurasia gharana of the Hindustani Classical music.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [2] Shamchaurasi had a population of 4221. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shamchaurasi has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 63%. In Shamchaurasi, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, is a Pakistani classical singer belonging to Patiala Gharana lineage. He was the lead vocalist of the Pakistani rock band Fuzön until 2006. He was awarded the President's Pride of Performance civil award on 23 March 2008.

The Patiala gharana, is one of the gharanas of vocal Hindustani classical music, named after the city of Patiala, India. It was founded by Fateh Ali Khan and Ali Baksh Jarnail, was initially sponsored by the Maharaja of Patiala State in Punjab and was known for ghazal, thumri, and khayal styles of singing. The most influential Patiala singer is Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Amanat Ali Khan

Ustad Amanat Ali Khan was a Pakistani classical and ghazal singer, from the Patiala gharana. Singing duo of both brothers Amanat Ali Khan and Bade Fateh Ali Khan were together honoured with the 'Pride of Performance' award by the President of Pakistan back in 1969. He stands with great singing icons like Mehdi Hassan and Ahmed Rushdi and left behind hundreds of classical and semi-classical songs for the public to remember him by.
