Silverburn is an out-of-town shopping centre located on Barrhead Road in Pollok, Glasgow, Scotland. The development replaces the 75-acre (30-hectare) Pollok centre with a brand new 1,500,000-square-foot (140,000-square-metre) shopping centre, anchored by Tesco, Next, Marks & Spencer and previously Debenhams before it closed in 2021.
Built on land that was previously the Pollok Centre dating from the late 1970s, [1] which itself replaced an unsuccessful development of tenement housing from the 1940s [2] the completed Silverburn opened for the first time on Thursday 25 October 2007, designed by BDP (architects), Stuart McTaggart (civil and structural engineers), Henderson Warnock (MEP & Utility Consultants) and constructed by Bovis Lend Lease. [3] [4] [5] The largest Scottish Tesco Extra had opened on 10 July 2006 at the site, replacing the Tesco store in the old Pollok Centre. It was the 1st naturally ventilated shopping mall in Scotland using a combination of wind catchers and underfloor heating to maintain comfort for shoppers. It has been said that the name "Silverburn" evolved from a local consultation, as the Brock Burn which lies west of the site (with footbridges connecting to the Househillwood and Priesthill neighbourhoods) was famous for containing large quantities of shopping trolleys from the previous Tesco store and this is where the 'silver glint' came from; [6] the practice of abandoning trollies has continued. Developed by Retail Property Holdings Ltd (RPH) to house 95 shopping units and 14 restaurants and cafes, it is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK. It includes one million square feet (90,000 square metres) of retail and leisure space, 2000 parking spaces in a multi-storey car park, and 2500 spaces on the ground. [8] In 2009, the centre was sold to Hammerson for £300 million. [9]
Silverburn is Glasgow's fifth out-of-town shopping centre. Being located right next to the M77 motorway it is easily accessible to people coming from Paisley or East Renfrewshire.
It was named the "UK's best shopping centre" in 2019, [10] the latest of several awards since its opening. [11]
In 2013, a programme of expansion of the centre was begun, to include a Cineworld cinema and nine new restaurants, [12] [13] completed in stages between late 2014 and mid 2015. [14] [15] [16]
After a proposal in 2014 to extend the centre over its current car parking area, [17] further plans for expansion were proposed in October 2015, with the intention to expand over the other side of the M77 with further shopping and leisure features, a hotel, and a community centre. [18]
A Silverburn mascot, a fox named Silvia, was introduced in 2018 following a competition between local primary school children. [19]
Nitshill is a district on the south side of Glasgow. It is bordered by South Nitshill to the south, Darnley to the east, Crookston and Roughmussel to the north-west, Hurlet to the west and Househillwood and Priesthill to the north, with the Pollok district and the Silverburn Centre beyond. An area of open ground to the south-west of Nitshill forms the boundary between Glasgow and the town of Barrhead in East Renfrewshire.
Pollok is a large housing estate on the south-western side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. The estate was built either side of World War II to house families from the overcrowded inner city. Housing 30,000 at its peak, its population has since declined due to the replacement of substandard housing with lower-density accommodation. As of 2021, the population was recorded at 81,951 people.
The St. Enoch Centre is a shopping mall located in the city centre of Glasgow, Scotland. The centre is located adjacent to St Enoch Square. The Architects were the GMW Architects. The construction, undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine, began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public on 25 May 1989. It was officially opened by the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in February of the following year.
Newton Mearns is a suburban town and the largest settlement in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. It lies 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Glasgow City Centre on the main road to Ayrshire, 410 feet (125 m) above sea level. It has a population of approximately 26,993, stretching from Whitecraigs and Kirkhill in the northeast to Maidenhill in the southeast, to Westacres and Greenlaw in the west and Capelrig/Patterton in the northwest.
The M77 motorway is a motorway in Scotland. It begins in Glasgow at the M8 motorway at Kinning Park, and terminates near Kilmarnock at Fenwick, becoming the A77 dual carriageway. Changes were made in 2005 segregating a lane on the M8 motorway almost as far as the Kingston Bridge, which in January 2006 was extended further onto the bridge itself. It forms the most northerly part of the A77 trunk road which links Glasgow to Stranraer in the South West of Scotland.
Southpark Village is a housing estate in the Darnley area of the Scottish city of Glasgow. The northwestern area was built during the mid to late 1980s, but the southeastern part was built in the late 2010s. It is located on the south-western edge of the city, close to the towns of Barrhead and Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire. Nearby areas within Glasgow itself are the rest of Darnley to the north, Deaconsbank to the east, and Parkhouse to the northwest, although Southpark is physically separated from all but the rest of Darnley by the Dams to Darnley Country Park and M77 motorway.
Crookston is a residential suburb on the southwestern edge of the city of Glasgow, Scotland.
Dundrum Town Centre is a shopping centre located in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. Darnley is an area in south-west Glasgow, Scotland, on the A727 just west of Arden. Other nearby neighbourhoods are Priesthill to the north, Southpark Village to the south, and South Nitshill and Parkhouse to the west; there is also a small industrial estate. The closest railway station is Priesthill and Darnley. The Brock Burn flows through the area.
Cowglen is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow, within the Newlands/Auldburn ward of the city but geographically closer to the large suburb of Pollok. It is situated south of the River Clyde. Much of its territory is open land occupied by a golf course, and it also adjoins Pollok Country Park.
Priesthill is a neighbourhood in the south of the River Clyde in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It falls under the Greater Pollok ward of the city council area. The Darnley neighbourhood is located to the south, on the opposite side of the Glasgow South Western Line railway, while Nitshill lies to the west and Househillwood and the Silverburn Centre shopping complex to the north. The M77 motorway runs to the east of Priesthill with open farmland beyond.

Glasgow Fort is a large out-of-town shopping and leisure park located in Glasgow, Scotland, just off Junction 10 of the M8 motorway which runs to the south, surrounded by the residential areas of Provanhall, Garthamlock and Easterhouse. It was opened in 2004 built on land which had been part of Auchinlea Park which still exists to its immediate east.
In the United Kingdom, an out-of-town shopping centre is an enclosed shopping centre located outside of a town centre. The impact of out-of-town shopping centres in the United Kingdom is studied in the context of urban planning, town centre redevelopment, the retail industry and even public health and gender divides. Due to its significance for these issues, it has been included in the school exam curriculum in geography. There are only about sixteen out-of-town enclosed shopping centres in the United Kingdom. Under current policy, no more will be built. All other British shopping centres are in town and city centres.
Union Square is a shopping centre located in the centre of Aberdeen, Scotland, which opened to the public on Thursday, 29 October 2009. The centre contains a covered shopping mall and retail park. Located on Guild Street and Market Street, the development adjoins onto the side of Aberdeen railway station and Aberdeen bus station creating a transport hub. The mall houses more than 60 shops, over fifteen restaurants a ten screen 2,300 seat Cineworld cinema and a 3-star Leonardo hotel with 203 rooms.
Parkhouse is a residential neighbourhood of Glasgow, Scotland close to the border with East Renfrewshire. It is located on the south-western edge of the city, close to the towns of Barrhead and Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire. Within the G53 postcode area and the Greater Pollok ward of the Glasgow City Council administration, the eastern cluster of private housing was constructed in the 1980s and the western part in the 2010s, prior to which it was open farmland annexed to Glasgow in 1938.
