Sindh Premier League (Sindhi : سنڌ پريميئر ليگ; Urdu: سندھ پریمیئر لیگ; abbreviated as SPL) is a professional Twenty20 league contested by six teams representing six cities of Sindh province. It was launched in 2023. [1] [2] [3]

History

Establishment

In June 2022, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the provincial minister of local government in an effort to promote and develop [4] [5] cricket in Sindh, [5] announced that there would be a domestic cricket team for Sindh soon inspired by the Kashmiri counterpart. [6] and soon in March of the next year, a launching ceremony was held in auditorium of Sindh Assembly and the guests included Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq. The first season of the league will be played in Karachi. [7] In the same month of march the league was officially launched and finalized, The launch ceremony was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Sindh [8] in Karachi [9] and attended by dignitaries from professions, including the provincial ministers Sharjeel Inam Memon and Saeed Ghani, Advisor Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and former captain of Pakistan cricket team Sarfraz Ahmed and various others. [10] Former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi announced to be its first brand ambassador. [8]

The league is said to commence from September 19 of 2023. [11] [12] [13]

Broadcasting

The league is set to be broadcast on its official YouTube channel. [8]

Criticism

The league came under severe criticism for not having sufficient presence of Sindhi players. Several journalists noted that the league was intended to promote Sindhi players but majority of the team squads did not have any Sindhi players. A journalist also pointed out that Mirpurkhaas Tigers did not have a single player that belonged to the city of Mirpurkhaas. [8]

Dadu District, is a district of Sindh Province, Pakistan. With headquarters the city of Dadu, the district was created in 1931 by merging Kotri and Mahal Kohistan tehsils from Karachi District and Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Dadu, Johi and Sehwan tehsils from Larkana District. In 2004, several talukas in the south were split off to create the new Jamshoro District. Its boundary touches with four districts of Sindh i.e. Jamshoro, Naushahro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad and Kamber Shahdadkot.

Old Golimar, is a neighborhood in the Karachi West district of Karachi, Pakistan. It is administered as part of the SITE Town neighbourhood.

The history of cricket in Pakistan predates the creation of the country in 1947. The first international cricket match in what is now Pakistan today was held in Karachi on 22 November 1935 between Sindh and Australia. The match was seen by 5,000 Karachiites. Cricket was introduced by the British during their colonial rule of British India, which covered the area now known as Pakistan. Cricket is the most popular sport in the country. The Pakistan Cricket Board controls all domestic cricket in Pakistan and the national teams. Pakistan is an official member of the International Cricket Council and the Asian Cricket Council. Regarded as one of the best and most passionate cricketing nations, Pakistan has won the Cricket World Cup in 1992, ICC T20 World Cup in 2009, the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017, the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2004 and 2006, the ACC Asia Cup in 2000 and 2012. Pakistan were runner ups in the 1999 Cricket World Cup and 2007 and 2022 T20 World Cups. Pakistan have also been runner ups in several Asia Cup editions.

Dr Fahmida Hussain is a Sindhi author, scholar, linguist and intellectual.

The Pakistan Champions Cricket League (PCCL) is a Twenty20 Club cricket league in Pakistan which was organised by Pakistan former captain Rashid Latif at Rashid Latif Cricket Academy (RLCA) in co-operation with Karachi City Cricket Organisation (KCCA). The event was previously known as Karachi Champions League which hosted only 16 cricket clubs from the city in 2010.

Shaheen Shah Afridi (Urdu: شاہین شاہ آفریدی; Pashto: شاهین شاه اپریدی is a Pakistani international cricketer and the former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team in the T20I format. He is also one of the prime bowlers of Pakistan. Under his leadership, Lahore Qalandars won their first PSL title in the 2022 season and again went on to win the 2023 season, becoming the first team in PSL history to successfully defend their title. He is the first Pakistani to win the Garfield Sobers Trophy.

It consists of seven franchises; six teams representing major cities in Kashmir, while one team is representing the Kashmiri diaspora. Each team plays the group stage matches in a single round-robin tournament with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs and ultimately for the final. Matches played in the Kashmir Premier League do not have official T20 status.

2023 Pakistan Super League was the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league which was established by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2015. Then PCB chairman Ramiz Raja had hinted at an auction based system to replace the draft for the 2023 season but a draft was retained. The draft for the tournament was held on 15 December in Karachi. A total of 36 foreign players were picked alongside local players. Lahore Qalandars were the defending champions.
