Sloppy Joe's Bar is a historic American bar in Key West, Florida located at the corner of Greene and Duval Street since 1937. [1] A frequent haunt of famous writer Ernest Hemingway, it is now home to the annual Hemingway Days celebration and its Hemingway Look-Alike Contest.

History

The main Bar structure was built in 1917; and the second building, which houses the Kitchen and Joe's Tap Room, was built in 1892. [2] Famous writer Ernest Hemingway was a regular patron of the bar in the 1930s. [3] Sloppy Joe's was purchased September 8, 1978 by Sid Snelgrove and Jim Mayer and has been owned by the two families since that time. [4] After its manager Michael Walton came up with the idea in 1980, [5] Hemingway Days became an annual celebration of Hemingway's life at the bar every July, including a Hemingway Look-Alike Contest. [6] On November 1, 2006, Sloppy Joe's was added to the National Register of Historic Places. [7]

Floridita or El Floridita is a historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar in the older part of Havana, Cuba. It lies at the end of Calle Obispo, across Monserrate Street from the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana. The establishment is famous for its daiquiris and for having been one of the favourite hangouts of Ernest Hemingway in Havana. The bar now boasts a life size bronze statue of Ernest Hemingway positioned in his favourite spot at the end of the bar. On a small plaque hanging in El Floridita, hangs Hemingway's signed quote: "My mojito in the Bodeguita del Medio and my daiquiri in the Floridita".

The Key West Library, also known as the Monroe County May Hill Russell Library, is main branch of the Monroe County Library System and is based in Key West, Florida. There are five branches that make up the Monroe County Library System and the Key West Library has been part of Key West island life for more than 50 years. The Key West Library is the southernmost branch of the Monroe County Public Library and is one of the oldest libraries in the state of Florida. The Key West Library serves more than a quarter of a million visitors annually. The Branch Manager for the Key West Branch is Kim Rinaldi.

The Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, in Ketchum, Idaho, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. The National Register does not disclose its location but rather lists it as "Address restricted." The property is the last undeveloped property of its size within the city limits of Ketchum.

Hemingway Days is an annual celebration of the life of Nobel Prize winning author Ernest Hemingway in Key West, Florida. The festival runs for three days each year, coinciding with July 21, Hemingway's birthday. The festival was founded in 1981 by Michael Walton as a promotional stunt for Sloppy Joe's Bar, of which Hemingway was a frequent patron when he lived in Key West. It most notably features the yearly Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, which is operated by the Hemingway Look-Alike Society.
